Here is the big dilemma...
You are going to a baby shower and you do not know the gender or the name of the baby (nor does anyone else including the mom) What on earth do you buy for them that will still be a thoughtful gift?
Personalizing a blanket would be nice but what exactly could you say?

i would go for a white blanket with "sleep tight!i love you and i'll watch over you tonight" embroidered in bright color - maybe a yellow green, or yellow - at the top portion so that when they tuck him/her at night,it would remind them to say those words. words are powerful and saying these words to a child gives them security. my husband and i whisper to our boy when he sleeps and it works wonders!

What I did for my best friend is get two outfits for each gender and I gave her the receipts to both, that way she could exchange them for the other gender outfit. She had a girl and ended up keeping both genders outfits, because paired with Purple, dark green looks girlie and same with blue and pink.
She loved the idea and thanked me so much for putting thought into it like that. She didn't want to have tons of light green and yellow outfits that are gender nuetrual. Also, everything I gave her she was able to pass on to her sis in law that was having a baby 6 months after her because by then my best friends baby had out grown the clothing I gave her.
If you go to Toys R Us they always have great sales!

You could personalize the blanket with the family's last name. Then it would be personal but also could be used for future children they might have. I love to do gift baskets for baby showers. Walmart sells a wicker laundry basket that is really cute. I fill it with baby stuff like diapers, wipes, lotion, etc. Then they have lots of baby care things plus a laundry basket to use for the babies clothes. If you want to get them something with the baby's name on it, get them something for the shower and then wait and get a gift for the baby after it is born and you know what name and color to get.

You could personalize the blanket with the surname of the family and the year which is 2009. That would last longer than neutral baby clothes. A colorful unit for storing toys might be nice and it would last for years. It couldn't be pink or blue so it would have to be multi colored. It would be useful for all sorts of storage as the child gets bigger.

You could buy an assortment sizes of onesies. They sell colored and printed ones that are general themed. Diapers are always a good gift. There a gain buy in assorted sizes. Photo frames with disney characters would be good. Stacking and educations toys are great gifts.
What did people do before it was so common to know what gender you were having. Back when I had my girls you didn't know what you were having until it got here. We had a lot of yellow and green clothing and the nursery never had girl or boy themes.
I went to my niece's shower and they had the guests buy a book with their name in it for the baby instead of a gift card. I thought this was a great idea. Only problem was if they got the repeated book. Once they were written in you can't return them. I guess you could take any duplicates to grandmas or to the babysitter for the child to enjoy.

How about a photo album? Or gift crtificates? You could always do a gift for the mother with pampering items for her. Diapers, socks, toiletries, monitors. Look on target or walmart websites and see if there is something unique. Or browse on ebay for a unique baby gift.
