Do you know about cars?

I guess I've taken this for granted because I always found it to be something I disliked growing up, but I always had to help my brothers or father fix cars and do maintenance on them...so I can honestly say a lot of times I can identify what is wrong or be able to describe the problem to my father (personal mechanic LOL). I probably could do a brake job or maybe even a transmission filter change or oil....cause I have been assisting for a long time now....I just hope I never have to do it. One definite advantage....one day if I ever go to a shop I don't think they can pull a lot over on me because I will at least have the terminology and basic understanding of autmotive stuff....at least for a "girl". So how about you women out there? ANd men, what do you think of this?

I'm like you!! My dad is and has been an auto mechanic for all of my life, so naturally, I've had to help him with projects here and there. I once did a brake job (replaced the brake shoes) entirely by myself, changed an EGR valve, and changed my own oil on multiple occasions. It's honestly really nice to have someone there to teach you these kind of things! I hope I'll never have to utilize these skills, either, but I think it's awesome to be a chick and know these kinds of things, and just in case of emergencies - we'll have an idea as to what to do.

I've thought about asking him to let me actually do the oil change, but honestly I don't know what would happen if the oil got on me once I dropped the pan and I know it would happen, I probably would jerk my head and get a goose egg....LOL But the thing is like you said I know I could if I had to.

I've been working on cars as long as I can remember. I drive a 1969 GTO and I work on it whenever it needs fixing. I think it's awesome to not have to ask a guy to fix my car when it breaks, and I like being able to beat the guys at their own game.

Nice car. I've always wanted a rebuilt mustang and my dad always wanted to find a junked one to rebuild for me...of course I would help him. and it's hard to find those bad boys....maybe one day. And you're right it's nice to know you don't have to depend on men for everything, but they're nice to have around LOL

I think its good to have general knowledge about cars, and not just "where the gas goes". Women often think its a guys job to know about cars but feel mad when they get taken at the auto shop. Its pretty cool that you know about that stuff, just don't intimidate us guys, please.

As a child my dad would pull my sister and I out to help work on the cars, and trucks. It was his way of bonding with us. Though, my sister is alot better at things like identifing what is wrong by the sound of something, I have my moments, where I can just pick it up and know. Though, I prefer not to do it, I can change tires, change the oil and minor things with the cars.
