Hi everyone ! I've started this discussion to help my daughter with a problem she has . My daughter just got a 7 month old cat from the local shelter . The cat
has some kind of issues with the stove in their apartment. She keeps backing up to the stove with her tail straight up , shaking the tip of her tail real fast .
The cat is doing this all the time . The cat even got on top of the stove last night and took a burner off the electric stove . I told my daughter that the cat might be spraying . Do any of you know anything about this behavior ?
She says that the tail shake thing is constant. Any ideas I can share with her would help ... thanks and have a great afternoon !!

Morning Beachstarz!
Couple of quick questions-cat is obviously male since you think it is spraying-right?
She has had the kitten for a short period of time-right?
We have 5 males-one that does the exact thing you are describing: we finally narrowed it down to 2 possiblities:
1.
If the stove surface is even slightly reflective they will pick up on it and think it is another cat. This is not necessarily a good thing from their point of view as they are territorial and in a shelter there is very little space.
2. The shelter has a lot of animals and it has gone from overcrowding to a safe place but if it has left behind one animal in particular that it called "family" it maybe a sign of lonelness and confusion.
What we ended up doing was finding a small plush toy, about the size of our kitten and set it out were he could find it(yes in front of the stove) and waited to see what he did. Backed right up to it and started grooming it. After that we moved the plushy to a safe area-sprayed it with some organic catnip(not a lot) and the stove was left alone after that.
Good luck with her baby.

Good mornin Charlene! Her new kitty is a female , but geez your thoughts on the matter sure make alot of sense ! I spoke with my daugther yesterday and she
thought that the kitty was starting to calm down pretty good . The woman at the shelter explained that the cat had been found outside , she was homeless . Maybe she seen her reflection in the stove and thought it was another kitty , and she was trying to protect the new home she has found with them. I don't know it sounds about right to me . I will have to talk to my daughter about this today..
Thank you for responding Charlene . I hope you have a great day !

Hi beachstarz, I’m sorry to say that I haven’t seen any cat doing this before. My neighbor keeps many cats and I could a couple of them would let their tails standing straight up when they are in anger. I see dogs like wagging their tails most of the time.
Really, it’s quite weird to see your daughter’s cat has such strange act. I had kept cats before and I know that they, the little kitten like playing with small insects they have caught which are still alive, like cockroaches and …. I wonder whether there is anything which the cat is interested hiding in the stove so it tries to make it out from there by. It feels anxious to wait for the prey to come out so keeping on shaking its tail. this is only my guessing ... Anyway it's lots of fun to have chitchat for a while with you here.
Happy posting and take care.

I've never seen tail shaking at the tip without spraying. But it's obliviously something from the cat's past. Maybe some bitter apple spray might make the stove less attractive. Good Luck

Hi savypat! I haven't thought of the bitter apple spray. Thats a good idea !
I will tell her about that tonight . I hope the cat is not spraying . I don't know if you can stop them from doing that once they start.
Thanks for your response , and have a good evening !
