Do you not read some discussions because of how they are written?

I just read one that was great, it was really inspiring but I almost deleted it from my mailbox when I saw its length--and there were no breaks! I clicked on the link because sometimes the email notification doesn't break posts into paragraphs. No such luck, my poor old eyes struggled through, losing my place frequently in an endless stream of sentences. Don't get me wrong, it was worth the trouble! But there are discussions I've not bothered reading because the lack of organizational paragraphs made them too hard for me to read. I'm a good reader and have an extensive vocabulary but my eyes really strain when I'm confronted with 600-700 words that are not organized into paragraphs, giving my eyes a break. Do you feel that I'm being overly picky or do such things put you off, too?

Nope, you're definitely not being overly picky. It bothers me, too. Even if some people have no clue as to where to begin new paragraphs, they could at least put breaks in such long posts every now and then. It's hard for me to read, too, and I'm sure that whomever posts such lengthy discussions with no breaks gets upset when trying to read similar posts from others. Hmmm, who was that author... shoot. My memory sucks! There's one rather well-known author who is famous for his lengthy, run-on paragraphs, I just can't remember his name. Jack Kerouac? Probably not. Oh, well, his name isn't important. The reason I mentioned him is because I TRIED to read one of his books once, the key word here being "ONCE"! LOL The very first paragraph was an entire page long, if I recall correctly. It could have been longer. I gave up about 1/4 of the way through that first paragraph. So, yes, in answer to your question, things like that put me off, too.

I could not read a book like that! What's strange is that now that I go back to that discussion it has paragraphs! I feel like an idiot. I know the poster and she's always very well organized and knows how to write well, so I was surprised at the lack of paragraphs. Now they're there! I wonder if I'm still sane...

I also tend to avoid those long winded discussions. I read them usually if from friends. But seldom answer unless I truely have something inspirational to add to others responses. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I skip some because I have nothing to add but I try to reply to most.

Same here....sometimes the long ones end up being a rambling of thoughts...not really a discussion.

I don't put too much restrictions on what I would respond to. I like reading long responses and discussions because I think it helps respond better and allows me to give more of an imput when I am responding to a discussion. I actually perfer the longer discussions, and I try to respond to people when they respond to my response.

no, in fact i started a discussion about basically the same thing. And I have found that most people would rather read a long post with breaks. IT does have to do with getting lost, or it seeming to be longer because it is a whole page without some sort of "paragraphs". I constantly put breaks in mine, because it is definitely easier to read! =)

My two primary reasons for deleting a discussion would be if it's about so called money making websites or if it's asking me to follow a link. Being long and cumbersome would probably be next down the list. There was recently someone I came across posting discussions who was able to write an entire paragraph without actually saying anything at all! I don't find too many that are overly long though, it's normally quite the opposite!

When I first joined here, I would look at the money-oriented discussions but soon realized that they're all mostly about the same thing, trying to get people to sign up under them for some mad scheme where nobody but the guy who stated it makes money!

I do try to read everything, too. Sometimes I can't read the email because it doesn't include paragraph breaks and the actual post does so I'll do it that way. The post I mentioned later showed paragraphs so it was something to do with my computer, I think, not the person who made the discussion.

I fully agree with you. I always break my questions and answers into paragraphs. I don't think people do this on purpose. They just don't know any better. Writing is a skill... and part of it is to grab people attention to make them read what you are writing about. Any web designer knows that it is very important to break text into small paragraphs in order to retain people attention.

What a strange place this is! The poster replied to me and when I looked at the post again, the paragraphs were there! I was surprised when I first read it because this person is usually a very good writer and knows proper punctuation and grammar. Then it appears in paragraphs when I return to it again! However, I've seen many that don't use paragraphs and it is irritating. Yes, writing is a skill!

Truthfully I find them too long to read...even though its from a friend..well some of my friends I do read even if it's long but I have a tendency to get sidetracked and give up if it goes on and on...

Usually if a post a friend has written is long, it will be interesting. I have a great bunch of interesting friends here! If I'm tired, I'll save it till the next day.

It's the same way with me. If they are waaaaaaay too looooong I will delete it. I'm much too busy to read something so long. I like things short and sweet usually. Purrs, Catwoman=^..^= & Mija

hello dragon54u i know what you mean when that you say that some of the Mylot discussions are tough to read like that. the ones that i have trouble reading like that i usually bounce right to the trash can. lol i hate to have to do that, but if i cannot make heads or tails of it then i am sorry, how can i respond to the discussion. lol you know? and i am a good reader as well, but i am not into straining my eyes either like that. and when that i start a new Mylot discussion, i always try to break my new discussion into different paragraphs so that it is easier to read. that is the only reason that i use the line breaks like that here at Mylot. but when that i respond to somebody's Mylot discussion, i usually do not need a paragraph break because i am talking about the same thing. right? a paragraph break like that is when that you are writing something and then you start talking about something different, then it is time for that paragraph to be there. lol take care and have a beautiful day today!

I have to cut/paste sometimes and break them into paragraphs. Even if it doesn't need it, my eyes still need a rest! And while I'm at it, when I do this, I make the type bigger!

wow-good question. I haven't really gotten any overly long discussions in my box. I usually just post to my friends, mostly Modstar who has simple, yet bizarre one line questions like, "Frogs or Bats, which do you prefer to nibble on?" But, frankly, i have begun deleting the digests as soon as I see them in my inbox, because I only use one email address and if all my friends post AND I get the digest as well, I have to wade through a morass of postings before I can get to the important stuff in my inbox-like bills and stuff. Sometimes, if I am flooded with postings and digests, I just delete everything from mylot. It just depends if I'm really busy and need to check my mail quickly. I don't respond to every post.

I try to answer all my friends' posts but I do usually delete the digest. I don't even know why I still get it, I should probably opt out of it but there are some interesting things in it sometimes.

When I write something like that, whether here or in a blog, I actually make myself go back and put paragraphs in. Sometimes you really get on a role and the train of thought goes a little longer than it should! If I'm in the right mood I'll wade through posts like that but usually I just skip it because that's way more screen-staring than my eyes can handle.

I really do try to read them, since the person made the effort to write it. But it surely strains the eyes!

Yes my friend I do read. I find some of them with much depth and some nothing at all. And still some posts are there with a terrible grammatical mistake which you would not feel like responding. I =feel at least when you are a citizen at my lot you have that capacity to write acceptable English.

I think people who don't speak English really try hard to make themselves understood. I don't hold that against them at all but I can hardly read a post that has several hundred words with no paragraphs.

I do not think that you are, in any way, being overly picky. It bothers me as well. I dislike it when I get something to read that is not broken up into paragraphs. I find that I get lost and re-reading several times. I usually give up as I think if they did not think it important enough to write correctly, it is not important enough to read. When it is written like that it takes some meaning away, I think.

What's strange is that when I went back to reply to the person after she replied to me--the paragraphs were all there! I am rather embarrassed by this and can't figure out why in the world the paragraphs weren't there the first time I looked!

I don't think you are alone. If I open up a topic that is really long and has no paragraph breaks, I tend to not bother either. It's not comfortable to read that kind of text off a computer screen so I prefer not to!
