hello there, this is my first discussion, i signed up today itself. This is about the fact that i believe Mike Portnoy is the greatest drummer in the world, i am a big fan of dream theater since im in standard 6, and this band has greatly inspired me since all that time, i started in this topic because i am listening to LIQUID TENSION EXPERIMENT 2 and it has got some great deal of drumming in that..who doesnt agree and who has other point of views are most welcome for a debate. thank you

personally.. i have heard a lot of great drummers excell at one kind of music and suck at another kind. I love dream theatre as well.. but I have to say I'm a Neil Peart from Rush believer. If you look at some of his amazing solo drum work, it is not only rhythmic but sometimes even melodic. Which is hard to pull off on a drum kit.

No, he is not. Sorry disagree, Portnoy is sure of the greatest, but not the greatest.
Is one of my top 3 drummers, sure. But try to search for Gavin Harrison, Dave Weckl, Dennis Chambers, Thomas Lang and see, there is other great drummers.

I agree with you, mike portnoy is the greatest drummer in the world. Not just the skill that awesome but also his ability to play in along time and constant. In dream theater i can see his leadership ability and support james labrie as a backing vocal. So if you want to decide the best drummer in the world, it can't just see from the skill but also the ability to play and mix as a team to create a great and powerful music. Like DT
