How do you have fun and save money at the same time?

In today's economy it is vital that we indulge in life's simple pleasures, but let me ask you, what are your simple pleasures? How do you still have a good time, enjoy yourself or your partner, what do you do to celebrate or just for a quick escape. Please, share your ideas....picnic tips, fun outings, different local activities that are a good place to be social and have a good time, without getting deeper in debt!

Lol....not quite sure what to add to all of this, but thanks for being a part of discussion. Earning money here does help in one aspect, the saving portion... :)

That's a strange question... since I don't feel the pressure of this hard time. As a matter of fact, ever since the newspapers are filled with words about the end of the world, my income has just risen... and my quality of life is much better than before... I do read in the news about people who lose their jobs, starve for bread etc. I think, most people should look at this hard time as an opportunity - an opportunity for a change. It is possible, that this time, is a time of revolution - a time in which the old economy has been shown as fragile as glass, and thus, it is replaced by a new one. Much like other revolutions, those who would be wise enough to "ride the wave", would emerge as the new "money holders", while those who were "money holders" before, and would not adjust, would find themselves left behind. I'm very sorry for all the families who suffer now - but I believe that is only natural for something like the current time to happen (look at the history)... So... what I suggest... find something you like, and make a business out of it. A fun business - no big investments etc. Just share what you love to do anyway... It is not only cheap - it is profitable. Either build a website, or start running shows or write a book; you could do this alone, or with your family. Eventually, you'll have something to look at and call your own (or, if you have done this with your mate/family - a mutual creation!). And if it is something profitable - all the better... :) Came out pretty long, but I hope you'll get something out of it...

From what you write, it seems I've hit a nerve, and this was not my intention. Even though, I am a returning soldier (almost everyone here serves for 3 years - I served 4...). I also did not start "rich". I don't know if I'm considered rich now but... to say money is not love is correct. But... the question is, where does it come from? I mean, if you had money, you could invest more in relationship, you could have more fun. What I suggested in my response was to do something profitable toghether, since this is what time dictates. Instead of being "broken" by this situation, make it a unifying event by working toghether, by finding something that the family/couple likes to do toghether, and make it creative. It does not have to be a business - it can be something creative and fun like writing a book toghether, inventing things, painting or whatever. The point is to do things toghether, and become closer to each other by doing so. Isn't it romantic?

That sounds like a career suggestion, but it doesn't answer my question. My success truly lies within my passion, I did not request career advice. It should not cost money to live or enjoy being the person or people I love. (e.g. boyfriend, family, etc.) And if you were just trying to rub in the fact that you have money, while thousands of people are without jobs, including returing soldiers, then it's wrong. I'm not talking about being a "money holder"....What about romantic, different, and cheap... Money doesn't = love. Au contrare...

my life's little pleasures. i think i have many those. cause i have been out of money every since i was young. i just enjoy simple things. i mean without my family support or help i just enjoy simple things. i only get to enjoy those other pleasures if my family will be the one to spend. so still in my adult age i don't or can't afford to buy expensive things for my self. for me i am more interested in having fun without having to spend if possible. but if not i think i have to shell out some money. like to buy some gadgets to give myself some source of hobby. and if i can enjoy to go out with friends i do so. but friends are usually busy with their own lives and it is not easy to have them have time with me to go out somewhere.

This is a very good discussion and I would definately look forward to your best response for my best outings. What I try sometimes is the McDonalds as it is little cheaper than other restaurants. Also you can try out Ice cream outings for a cheaper medium.

McDonalds dollar menu is one of my favorites. I never really required anything expensive, actually, I know I like McDonald's. Not so sure about most other places. I'm picky too. Thank you.

It might sound a bit boring or old-fashioned. I like having sports with my hubby, it save money, spend time and help keeping my body fit. I can't think any of activities can save money. Everything is just so expensive here.

Where do you go to play sports? He'd probably like that if it wasn't a "lame" sport, you know what I mean. He's a guy guy. :) That's a really good idea!

I like to search for museums, historic sites and parks that have free admission. As a matter of fact, I even write articles on eHow on how to travel to different cities on a budget. I can even go to Las Vegas and not spend any money except for food and drinks. And I have a link on my web site listed under my profile that will take you to my moorefreetravel.awardspace.com web site. I think I have as much fun finding free things to do, as I do in actually performing the tasks. LOL

I did this the last valentines day : First, I went to this cheap fish market (Flemington - we live in Sydney, Australia) and got a Salmon for only about $15 dollars for two big pieces. Then I bought potato as well (maybe $4 for the whole bag or something I forgot). I cooked and grilled the salmon, grilled the potato and then have a romantic dinner together with my husband. Instead of eating in the dining room as usual, I brought my dining table (it is a small one) to the balcony and eat under the stars with candles ... As I am a gardener, I could just pick and cut my roses, put it in the vases to put in the dining table as well. Then after dinner, we will watch movies (rent some DVD) and spend the night... If you want you could buy ice cream from supermarket and make some milkshake or eat some ice creams... Totally romantic and that is only under $20 !! (usually if I eat out on any normal restaurant per person will cost around $15 or so ... and that is only chinese food or thai food etc....definitely not salmon :P )

LuckyDolphin~ I like Salmon, but of all the seafood that is one thing my boyfriend does not like. Thank you for the candle/balcony/stars idea! We have a balcony, that overlooks the woods in the back and you can see the stars, seems like I should take him upstairs for dinner tonight....maybe I can work something out.... Thank you!!!

The library. Believe it or not, most libraries have a host of activities you can do that don't cost a dime. Ours lets us rent movies, and the larger branches have coffee shops and the like. Granted, it's not dinner and a movie, but it gets you out of the house and there is something to do. They also host talks, things for the kids, etc. It's a great resource in troubled times. I also find the lost art of window shopping is fun. Walking around the shops, not to buy, but to look. There is a lot to see and not just in the store. The people are fascinating. It can be depressing to see all the things you can't afford, but it can also be liberating to realize that you don't "have" to have everything that tickles your fancy.

DH and I are fortunate enough to live in a college community. There are so many concerts, art shows and other cultural events that are available to us free of charge as members of the community. We also love the beach and live about 45 minutes away from the Pacific Ocean. We can walk the beach for hours at a time, exploring coves and then go to the local market and barbecue in one of the fire pits at the beach. We also live very close to a botanical garden and a wilderness park which are both free of charge. If all else fails, we sit on the patio at Starbucks and people watch. We live in Southern California and there are days when the Arboreteum, the Huntington Library and various other museums are open to the public free of charge. Needless to say, those are the days that we visit. There are tons of low cost and no cost things to do. You just have to search them out. Best of luck to you in finding them.

Sounds like you live in the perfect place...doesn't seem quite fair.... I do try to find out what is going on at the local schools, but it seems like they might be lacking in some activity departments...or maybe it is just the south during the winter... thanks for your input! happy mylotting

Well if you go out to eat make sure you have coupons. I know it sounds silly but it does save a bit of money. Umm walks to the park or going to see a free concert of your favorite band. If a free day was invented then that would solve our problem.

We live in Miami, so usually my husband and I will pack a cooler with goodies and drinks and head down to the keys or to the beach. We take a couple of books and spend the day sunning and relaxing.

Well, if your female and you like to drink, go to a bar with a lot of boobage hanging out and every man in the place will by you drinks. If you are flat chested try one of them push up bras or stuff it with whatever. Unfortunately I am male and the sock trick does not work that well. It looks like I have a giant tumor down there.

Well regarding simple things, me and hubby are just fine together when we play computer games and watch movie on our pc at home. Last February, Valentines Day we did not go out to dine, but instead what my hubby did was cook food for me, then he bought a dozen of red roses, a champagne for a toast and bunchy sweet seedless grapes that we keep on munching because it was really fresh and crunchy. That is how we celebrated Valentines Day. In times of need, we both know how to adjust. So i help my hubby on saving because for now i am depending on work at home thingy since my visa does not allow me yet to work here. Happy Mylotting!
