Look out! Your house is trying to kill you!

I listen to the radio every day and this morning my favourite breakfast show had a guest, I don't remember his name although I think as some one suggested "Dr Gloom" would be appropriate. This guy is a regular guest; he gets on the radio and because of his qualifications advises listeners on how to be healthy. You can imagine, don't eat this, don't drink that and you will probably die young if you do that! It's quite depressing actually. Today he talked about ways in which your home could be killing you, that's right your own home is trying to kill you! He talked about the chemicals we use in our home and how they are not really needed and that there are natural alternatives out there that work just as well. Now I say he probably has never tried to clean a filthy home but I am willing to learn about this. My home is pretty clean thanks to the different cleaning products I use each week. My questions to you MyLotters are these: Do you use chemicals in your home? Do you believe they are really as dangerous as "Dr Gloom" describes? If you are into natural products what do you use to clean grime, I mean real grime like mould in the shower or grease from a stove top, get the picture? I'm talking about real dirt! Please share I want to know how MyLotters are cleaning!

I use all mild cleaners in my home. I don't care for the chemical smells. When I can afford it I get organic cleaners. Otherwise good old water and floor detergent (it wont' print the name as it says it is a violation of the myLots terms of use., or baking soda and vinegar, vinegar for cleaning windows. I use vinegar a lot.

I heard vinegar is useful around the house. I didn't know you are not allowed to mention product names, there you go I have learned something! Thanks for that!

I agree with you. As soon as they let me know about it, I knew what they were referring to it, I just changed it, better to that then cause problems.

We have a product down here called Simple Green which I believe is natural but I didn't like the scent much so I don't use it. I never use strong cleaning products around my house because I have pets but I do like a fresh, clean scent. Lately I've been using Mr. Clean with febreze and it smells great! There has been a big problem down here in Florida with Chinese drywall and mold. A lot of homes were built using this and I don't know exactly what they're going to have to do to make their homes safe but I'm sure it's going to cost a lot of $$$$$$.

That sounds worrying! I heard that mould in houses can be quite dangerous, hope that gets sorted out for the good of all. Thanks for responding and the product tips!

What is Chinese drywall? Do not tell me we cannot make drywall anymore in USA and Canada. There are so many problems with Chinese stuff I think we should have special inspection of all their junkie products. I see they are counterfeiting eggs now and duck eggs contains a banned chemical.

I usually use home remidies because they are more natural and less expensive -- The usually work well for me but I never wait to clean until it gets hard to clean

That's probably the key; once the house is really clean then it will probably be easier to maintain with good natural products. Thanks for responding!

I always open up a few windows after using cleaning products to allow the fumes to clear. For mild cleaing nothing more than soapy water does the job for me. For mould in the shower rub wth biological washing powder, this works well. Unfortunately sometimes you have little choice but to use chemical cleaners :(

That's what I find; some dirt needs stronger stuff. Good tip for shower mould. Thanks for responding!

I know what you mean, there are new things you should or shouldn't be doing every day and at the end of the day common sense has to prevail. It is interesting to hear about the dangers of certain cleaning products though and it does make sense that there may just be a danger there. I might be inclined to follow some of Pyewacket's hints because not only do they sound safer, I'm sure they will be quite a bit cheaper too! Thanks for responding!
