That must have been a scary capture for the pirates by the German navy. The men look quite poor and are probably from a country in Africa. A missile cruiser must look rather terrifying.
My son used to love playing with toy pirate islands and toy ships when he was younger. There are movies like Pirates of the Caribbean that make being a pirate seem quite acceptable to some people.

Some people want to be a pirate because it is 'fun'. (Joking)
Just think of it this way, every successful kidnapping and hijack of merchant ship's cargo or sailors can potentially net them a ransom of several millions of dollars in a matter of day from 'weak' countries. It is a highly lucrative career for these pirates who believe they are the king of the ocean and no one in the world can stop their criminal activities in international water. They are practically free to do whatever they want since UN had talk about piracy in Gulf of Aden for the past few years but so far had no action on them except 'Talk'. Until UN security council can match talk n resolution with action quickly, being a pirate for Somalian seem to be the quickest way to become a millionaires in Africa.
