Can you give up white bread for wheat bread?

I've been trying to give up white bread for wheat bread because wheat bread is more healthful - less fat, less starch, more fiber and all that stuff.
But sometimes I just have to have white bread - I miss it! It feels like trying to give up on rice. I tried it and was able to avoid rice for more than a month but when I tasted it again, it was just so good! I never skipped rice for more than a few days after that.

Oh my, I've not eaten white bread in who knows how long. I can't stand the taste of it. You don't have to avoid rice though. Rice is very healthy for you. There is a great misnomer that you can't have rice. Like any starch, you want to make sure you're eating a balanced meal, and the Western diet is definately not condusive to it. In our home we eat rice several times a week, it's a staple. However, we also eat lots of veggies and fruits.

What's bad about it is that I really really like rice - so I tend to eat too much. And given that I'm a small person (short, also not fat) I only need a little more than 1000 calories to maintain my weight... So "a little too much" on food causes a lot to my body.

Your way around it is to exercise more. If you put on a bit more muscle weight you'd find you'd be able to burn more calories. If you simply want to maintain, then exercise more for the extra few calories from rice. Remember that even though rice is between 150-200 calories per cup, it has no fat. It is a carb along with potatoes and one of the good ones that your body can use right away for energy. Unlike those carbs that your body can't break down because of sugars and ends up storing as fat. I've never been into calorie counting, but I do practice portion control. So here are two easy fixes that will help you out.
The first one is you can practice eating all of your meals out of one bowel. The book is actually called One Bowel that this comes from and is rather in-depth. What I'm giving you is the small size version. Eating in one bowel forces you to take less, and because everything has to go in one bowel at one meal, you're less likely to mix things that you shouldn't.
The second one is to simply buy smaller plates. The average American has 12-13 inch dinner plates. So, we feel we should load them up. Try switching all of your meals to a 9 inch salad plate. You'll find you will take less.

Portion your rice so that it is one quarter of your meal. Add more vegetables to your equal to one half or the meal and you won't have as much room for extra rice because of the fiber from the vegetables and you will maintain your weight more easily.

Hi oyenkai.. I tried to give up white bread before, it worked for me for couple of days. I just dont like the taste of wheat bread so i went back to white bread then. Giving up rice? Yes I did, and it lasted for more than a year. I developed some eating problem along the way thus i stop my diet plan before it will lead to something serious. I might try to give up rice this year, not totally give up but slowly reducing my rice intake maybe.

White bread for me is a thing of the past, I have not eaten or bought white in years and years. I always buy wheat bread, because I like the taste better than I do white bread. I did not stop eating white bread because of health benefits, I just preferred the taste of the wheat bread. Sandwiches, always look more appetizing to me on all breads except white. I actually got my husband eating wheat bread, and he likes the taste as well.

Yes, I can. I can say this with certainty because I already have done it. Now, when I try to eat white bread, especially the Wonderbread crap they sell in stores, it tastes to me kind of like eating glue. It's just gummy in your mouth with no taste and no character.

For the most part I eat wheat bread, I just like the taste better. And like you said it's better for you. I do have to admit, I'm not a real big bread eater lol. I have a sandwich maybe once a week, and I rarely have bread with any other meal. I might have a piece of toast a couple of times a week, but that's about it.

I actually prefer whole wheat bread. When it started appearing in the market my mom made the decision to switch to whole wheat. So growing it it was mostly whole wheat for me. Well, I've had my fair share of white bread and still eat it sometimes. But I have gotten used to eating whole wheat already. It's actually yummy. :)

I do not know what the attraction of white bread is. It has no taste, is gummy instead of crumbly, and is constipating, clumping up like clay in your intestines. It is so devoid of nutrients, especially if using bleached four (who bleaches their food?) that they have to put the natural nutrients that have been removed back in.
You can eat white bread if you want to, but I prefer the whole wheat.

For the sliced bread, we now prefer buying wheat bread. But when it comes to pandesal, I still prefer the white one over the wheat variety. I believe it's just something you'll adjust to. At the beginning I didn't like wheat bread because of its taste and texture. But thinking that I am doing the switch for my health makes it more worthwhile. :) Just like when we switched from white rice to brown rice. We also had to go through an adjustment period.

As the saying goes, been there and done that many years ago. It was easy as I found other breads I liked. One of my favorite breads is Oatnut made by Orowheat. I don't eat nearly as much bread as I used to for a number of reasons and I usually eat brown rice unless I am having sushi or basmati or some special rice and that is usually if I am in a restaurant.

I have not noticed that about brown rice. There are many different ones also. I have not eaten anything from a Subway restaurant in a long time, but I know the breads you mentioned.
