How far would you take a lie to keep someones head up?

So as human beings, it doesn't matter what your role in life is you have lied to someone to make the feel better. Mabey even to keep thier head up to push forward. You have been lied to also. It's just a way of life. I'm sure at the very least you've told someone their clothes looked good, but in all actuallity you know they could have picked out something better. I know for a fact that everyone does this just to make people feel good about themselves. How far would you take a lie to make a person feel good? How far have you taken a lie? What good/bad, can/has come out of these little white lies? Don't feel ashamed to tell stories either. Mabey you could prevent a future white lie disaster.
