The two people who posted above you were correct. I just learned about this, and could not believe the law. Apparently beating your wife was a sign of male dominance, therefore was allowed with a few exceptions. This law was stated that you couldnt beat your wife with anything biger thicker than your thumb. Some countries/areas laws were as loose as you couldnt leave any marks on the face, where others didnt have any laws against wifebeating!

Along with what was said, I believe it was that anything was able to be used to beat the wife, as long as the item is no thicker than the man's thumb.

I heard rumors that it was an old law (British maybe?) that a husband could not use anything bigger around than his thumb to beat his wife. I have no idea if this is true, and how it would be to try to enforce it. It's interesting to think about, though.
