Metaphorical Pissing Contest - who's had it worst

When I get to talking with some people about personal stuff and see their expressions like they're judging me and can't wait to talk about how they have it worst -- and they actually do it -- I can't help but feel the blood rush to my head.
It's like when my relatives talk to each other and start enumerating their ailments and medications. Seriously, it seems that they are into this metaphorical pissing contest to see who has the worst case in the lot - like it's a good thing!
We may not have the same degrees of bad things going on but they are personal things - they are serious to the person who is experiencing it. I guess I just wanted to rant about this thing that I've noticed for so long. But seriously, I think that no one ever wins here.
So have you ever consciously or unconsciously had this metaphorical pissing contest with anyone to see who had or has it worst? How did that make you feel?

Maybe this is what they mean by the words, "misery loves company". I find this situation not to my liking and when I get into one of these, I slowly find my way out of this crowd without pissing anyone off. Cheers!!

So true. I try to do that too (before I get pissed!) but it is tricky especially if the other person doesn't want to back down. But I have learned to sort of recognize when it's coming so I either change the topic quickly or, yes, get the heck out -- pronto! LOL
