Ok so here is the problem. Forget about my mum's 60th birthday I have got that pretty much wrapped up, excuse the pun!! LOL . Anyway, it is my father's birthday on the 16th March (yep mum's the 13th, dad's the 16th how lucky am I?). I had decided to buy him a DS game but his fiance says that since she bought the DS for him for Christmas it has remained in the top drawer! As I am sure you have guessed by now that I have no clue what to buy him. We have only been speaking since last year but prior to that we were not in contact for about 16 or so years so I am out of touch of what he is in to. He will be 61.
Does anybody have any ideas of what I could possibley buy my father for his birthday for around £20/$28?

i think men are so hard to buy for. give him a gift certificate to a nice restaurant or where he gets his hair cut or something like that. does he have any hobbies, maybe u could go that route. i'm glad u are now talking to him. my dad & i had problems to so i can relate to waht u are saying. good luck w/him.

hmm..... maybe a botlle of "palinca", "palinca" is a drink, a very strong drink with alchol from my country, Romania, you can bay him something like that, i have sugestet "palinca" because this drink is very good for health, and im sure you didn t even hear about it :D :P, bay him somthing very original, im sure he will be happy no matter what kind of gift will recive from you, after all, the gesture is the most important, not the gift :P

Hi Humbug, I no it sounds a bit boring but maybe a new dressing gown or toiletry bag with goody's in. I can't think of anything else, men are so difficult, especially older men. I hope your mum liked her stuff. Have a good day

Is there any way you could meet him half way? It would show good faith on both of your parts..but ofcourse, if you have no way to travel, I guess you cant..although if hes your dad, would he come to you maybe not on his birthday but a day before or after and go out for dinner near you? If he wouldnt for his own child, I know what I would get him next year!

Get him a gift certificate and taking him out to eat for his birthday. Or get some tickets to something he would like, ask his fiance to give you some ideas. A wallet is always nice.

You are very welcome Hamburg. That is just something that all men can use at one time or another. And if they don't quite need it now, most men put it in there dresser drawer and use it when they need a new one. So it definitely is not a waste.
No need to apologize, I have been busy as well.
Hugs

Are you able to talk to the fiance to get some ideas of what he is into now. Do you remember any thing your dad used to like when you talked to him. Is there a special resturant he likes to eat at. Gift certificate for there would be good. Is there a movie he didnt see that would like to see. A series on TV that you can get the season for him. Dose he need anything in the house that you can get him. My best bet right now is I try to see if I can talk to the fiance to see if she has some ideas for you or needs or wants that you could get him.

If you haven't been in contact for so long, why not make up an album of family photos. Kind of a catch up on all the years he missed.
Erm... not sure what else. Men are hard enough at the best of times! Perhaps ask his fiance if there's any books or films he's wanting at the moment.
There are of course the usual socks, aftershave, or something as equally unoriginal that says dad on lol.
Good luck x

Hi ya jillhill
To be honest I am not a big fan of gift cards as I don't like people to know how much (or how little!!) I have spent on them and I like to give a gift to someone that I have really given some thought about what the person would really like.
Thanks for your help and your response

Well i know food can't go wrong. My mom loves eating sweets so I buy her some chocolates at some occasions. You can always bake some stuff which makes it even more special. If I had some monney, I would invite her to a restaurant or something. Then you will be sure that your dad won't put your gift in the corner and you won't have to waste monney on something which will be unused. If I had more monney, I would invite them to a spa for a massage.Since he's 61, a good massage can't go wrong :P

no problem but a massage could be a little bit costly I never went to a spa. A simple massage here can easily cost 65$ for 1 hour...that's what my friend told me. then maybe you would have to buy something since it isn't in your budget. so I have no clue now :(

How about a gift certificate to an electronics store? I love electronics myself.
I hope this helps a bit. Ask your mom what she thinks he would like.

This is a hard one! You may have to go conservative withg a shirt or something especially as you do not know what he really likes. I would not know what to do except to go traditional with a gift. I hope tha tother mylotters have better suggestions than mine. I'm not good at shopping

Hi ya cynthiann
Thanks for your help, I know it's a tricky one that's why I thought I would ask as many people as I could. Sorry for the delay in responding, as you know I have been really busy and just so that you know I opted for a very recent photo in a frame of me and my boys, he seemed to like it - phew!
Cheers Cynth

Hi humbug, as I said before about your mum and it would mean even more to your dad, why don't you get him something personal from you with perhaps yours and his name engraved in it he would treasure that..hugs littleowl

Hi ya littleowl
I did take onboard with what you said about my mum and I have started this French knitting thing for her, bit of a private joke there which she will appreciate! I think maybe a pocket watch for my dad with something engraved on the inside. Thanks again for getting my grey matter going!!
Thanks for responding too littleowl

Hi ya jziakhan
I am not sure what type of cologne he would like and my mum doesn't know that much about him anymore as they have been divorced for 20 years or so now!! LOL . He was given a DS for Christmas and thought that Braintraining would be a good one for him as he loves crosswords.
Thanks for your response
