i know why donuts have holes. actually, the real spelling is doughnut. i learned this one from tlc. donuts had been around for a long time. but way back then it was square. anyway, it was one of those foods that voyagers bring on trips. however, it gets easily spoiled since they found out that the center of that square bread, now known as donut, doesn't get fully cooked. a forward thinking lad thought of getting rid of that easily spoiled center thus donuts got the holes. as to the circle shape i guess it came after the hole. but it was only now called donut. it was called differently then. although the word donut exists already way back then, by those olden times, donut is another form of food. not that bread relative we like to take now with coffee.

The most believable answer I found was for even cooking. If the hole was not there, the center would not cook as thoroughly as the outside, so with the hole.
There is also a story about a sea captain on a stormy night impaling his fried cake on the wheel of his ship but that story was obviously plagiarized on at least a dozen sites, so I can't verify if it is valid or not.
