are the memories stored forever in our brain? Is it permanent? The "memory" i am referring to here is the memory as in "the capability of retaining and recalling past experiences". Please I need detailed and scientific reasons and answers. Thank you.

There is a lot we just don't know about the brain and how it works. I know my kids will tell me things we did and I have absolutely no recollection of the event, but I can remember telephone numbers from when I was a kid. I think the way we remember has to do with significant events and the impact on us. I'm sure there is some things forgotten that can be brought thorough by hypnosis, if one is prone to that. But I really think this forum is the wrong one for strong scientific evidence, most of us are just every day people, not scientists.

i tend to think that memories are not stored forever we however are capable of remembering things which happened in the past when we are subjected to an environment which triggers the memory, for example if u were mugged in a particular spot(am sorry to use this example but i hereby apologize in a advance if i offend u,but allow me to kindly use this example)and lets say that u had 4gotten the ugly incident .u will realize that wherever u pass through that spot u will keep on remembering what happened,u c what i mean?even though u had 4gotten about the ugly attack vented on u but by passing through this place u kind of remember...another thing u need to know also is that your memory is like a muscle if u don't use it u loose it with time,u have to continuously joggle your memory, use other parts of brain that u don't use because soon your brain will b weak,,do puzzles or try using your left hand if u are right handed handed,do something u have never done b4..........

Yes, memories are permanent if you want them to be. I did a memory exercise with my youngest daughter about ten years ago, when she was 8 years old. It involved a van parked under a tree on the corner of our street. To this day I can trigger total recall of that van because I set it in her permanent memory, not in her temporary memory. She can tell me just about every detail of that van including what was written on the side of it.

I learned that with age going up, our long term memory can be kept pretty well, while the short term memory is getting poor. I still remember experiences in early days when i worked in the north and they keep coming back to my dreams, but things which occur in recent years just go away easily. By using the mind, i hope the memory would not deteriorate so fast.
For pupils and students, who learn a language, we need to have repeated reviews to surpass the moments of memory loss. Only through several reviews and using them in contexts can the newly learned words and expressions turn from passive vocabulary to active vocabulary, and kept in our long term memory.

not all memories can be stored in our brain since we humans have 2 kinds of memory..the long term & short term..some memories can be recalled for quite sometime but then it will be lost as time passes by..but there are some which are just repress and can be recalled whenever being stimulated..^^

The wonder of our brain. Not all memories will remain, the permanent usually those that is important; important in sense that it affect our life, but the happy memories normally will not stay for long compares to the sad one. Another one is that being stored in our subconcious sphere. To certain extend, we can forget everything that happened even it happened just a few second before. Brain make a judgement of which is important and which is not, and being affected by our emotion too.

Learning and experiences are stored in our memory. Permanent memories are those which you give focus and interest to be retained, while others are just passing events. To refresh those passing events simply go back to your old associates and together recall your past. Sharpness of the memory depends on how we use our brain. Did we give him proper rest, the food the brain needs, not intoxicated with hard chemicals that hardened the brain cells.
