Please help! Notebook Vs. Desktop?

I've decided to buy a notebook ( Blue H1 UMPC )Right now, it's a best buy and recommended because it's more cheaper and the specs are more okay than any other notebook. I will be needing it for my internet research only. So I don't need a high end laptop. But my friend says notebook don't last for long unlike desk top. I am quite confused now. I don't wanna invest to something that I am not sure of. Please help me. Money is hard to earn now a days that it's crisis. I want it to be value for money and worth it. Any one here can help me. For Notebook users How long it will last? and beside is it true that you cannot use it more than 4 hours a day? So now I am thinking to bring my old desktop for repair and upgrade instead buying a new one. ?? Or better if buy another desktop. My only problem is when I am out, let say on vacation of course I cannot bring desktop with me. grrrr.... I am totally confused. Please help me....Thanks a lot for your advice and reading this.
