What do you think the biggest problem with Americans is?

I live in what I consider to be the greatest country on Earth, the USA. Now I have a few problems with this country but really my biggest one is the people that live in this country. We have the biggest problem that will probably ever face man-kind, laziness. We have all the luxuries of life, but how many of us are to lazy to get off the couch do something that needs to be done? Why do we feel we are entitled to receive something we didn't earn? This isn't really a conversation on welfare but I'm going to use it as an example.
There are many cases of people needing help that have tried, and I emphasize the word tried, to make a living but can't. They in my opinion should be able to receive assistance under the condition that they keep on trying. Why should I have to pay for someone to live simply because they don't want to work? I work hard for the little that I have, why should I have to pay for a lazy bum? But that's not the only example I have. I head this week that students have told there teachers that they deserve a passing grade just for showing up to school without having to put any effort into their work. Is that really the direction that this country is heading in because if it is, we are screwed.
What do you think of this? Is there something we can do to prevent anymore of this from happening?

Hi, I don't think this is a problem just in the USA but in all the so called "developed countries". I lived both in Sweden and the UK and the laziness is everywhere. I think the fact that our countries have all the luxuries we need makes some people lazy. Many kids are very spoilt these days and I think that if you grow up never having to work/fight for the things you want/need you will lack the "get up and go" attitude that is needed to succussed in life.
...or maybe some people are just born being lazy :)
I believe the biggest problem with America is how it promotes itself to the rest of the world, but this seems to have changed to the better now you got a new president. It seems like America promote this "all your dreams can come through" mentality but at the same time it seems to be millions of poor people that don't fit into the "American way", that I find sad.
The only place I ever been to in America is New York, I loved it!!!:)

Yes we have many lazy people. The people in my family and my boyfriends family are no different. For some reason the men seem to think that they can just rely on everyone else to take care of them. The won't work and won't keep a job for more then a month or two at a time. When they do work they blow all of their money on things like alchohol or something not nessacary for their family. My brother rather then get a job continues to move from friend to friend or family member to family member to have somone support him. He's come very close to not having a place to live a few times and still refuses to work. My family has no problem helping someone when they help themselves but he is really at the end of the line with my family helping. I don't understand how you would prefer to have someone else do everything while you sit on your butt. I don't know how to prevent this from happening but I've tried hard with working on my brother and it doesn't seem to be getting us anywhere.

I'm not a american,I didn't know the situation you told us eitherI. After reading what you said I think the best way to solve the problem is that the government should take some measures to change the situation,For example, making a investigation before giving money to the need people .For me,the biggest problem in US is that the government should pay more attention on domestic issue other than other country's affair.
