i don't think it is said that dudley saw the dementors....neither in the books or in the movie....he felt them...and later on realized that harry was telling the truth...one reason for this maybe was that his mother knew about dementors as well....that is why he asked "are there more?"...that is what i think

In the movie, Dudley was acctually looking through the dementor. Muggles can't see them, so he was looking in the general direction and it looked like he was looking at the dementor. I know when I'm staring into space and it happens to be in the general direction of one of the kids I take care of, they ask me why I'm staring at them when I'm not. If I remember the movie correctly, Dudley was lying on the ground so the dementor was above him. I think the director told the actor to look at a certain spot on the celing and when they added the cg dementors they put the one attacking Dudley in the wrong place. Those are my thoughts. I don't think he could see the dementors in the movie.

he did not, he felt it though, like every wizard and muggle who gets near a dementor, their very soul is being sucked out of them... he did not see what caused this... although even to dudley's level of thinking, it is very clear that it has something to do with harry...

Its that dudley could only feel the dementors. That is when a dementor comes near you you'll find all your happiness ebbing away and beeing filled with dread. You start to thing you are hopeless and remember dredfull things. This is what dudley felt he went near a dementor. If he could see the dementor he would not have run towards them, but it says that he panicked and ran towards them as he could not see them.

I always thought that rather then see the Dementors for what they were it is more like that of an ill feeling that approaches. It was dark and the shadows would prevent anyone from actually seeing anything but the feeling of dread and confusion would invade and being cold the possibility of water particles condensing around the Dementors giving them a ghostly appearance. I read the book and saw the movie a while ago with a group so I can't remember how they did it in both cases but that is how I always thought that it had been possible.

From what I recall in the book he couldn't see them but could feel them and he had thought that Harry had been the one to do magic on him of sucking the happiness out of him. In the movie I believe it looked more like he could see them but there he also pointed at Harry as the one who had done that to him.
