Business - Are you self-employed?

Are you self-employed? or are you contemplating becoming self-employed?
These days so many people are being put out of work by the economic situation that many of them must be resorting to starting up something on their own in the hopes of bringing in some cash to keep the wolf from the door.
So far, I am lucky, my husband is still in a well paid job, but since he is a contractor, when this contract ends, he could find himself out of work ... and then what?
I left the world of 'employment' back in 2005 when my twins were born and so far haven't re-entered it. I feel that right now is not the right time to try to get back into paid work and there are a number of reasons for that.
1. Those that have jobs are holding onto them for dear life = result - very few jobs available.
2. After not working for 3 or 4 years it will be very hard to get back into the work force - even harder given the current situation the world over.
3. I still need to be flexible for my kids - available to drop them at school and collect them when school is finished. Yes there are after school clubs, etc but we don't have a family network near us to help out with the fetching and carrying and babysitting so it would mean that my salary would all go on childcare - is it worth it?
Anyway, to get back to my original question - are you self-employed?
I have over the last year been self-employed and am currently running 3 online stores and have just opened up my Secretarial business called CosmicXpress Secretarial Services - the site can be seen at cosmicxpress.co.uk if you are interested (this is not an affiliate link or get rich quick scheme).
What do you do in your line of self-employment? How long have you been self-employed? How is your business doing in the economic downturn? Have you seen a huge difference since the recession hit?
Thanks

I work for myself. I've had "businesses" too. I used to have clients where I'd watch their homes and pets when they went out of town. I lost many clients due to foreclosures and relocation. Many people stay home these days it seems so that's put me out of work in that field. Now I mainly do writing sites and Zazzle. I've been successful with eBay but it's more of a hassle to me so I'm planning on finishing it up soon before Thanksgiving.

I work full time but have my own little business on the side called "To Touch a Heart".....I do craft and art fairs selling my poetry framed, greeting cards I make and other crafty things including painting on glass. I did a show in November that turned out to be my best show yet....so I think it's just a matter of what you have to sell and how it presented and if it's affordable....I also write books and sell them both at the shows and online etc through major bookstores.
