So, are cats good companion pets, bona fide members of the family? Or are they simply domesticated mammals that are highly unsanitary and lower your property value? Which is it?

You've got to be kidding! There is no dichotomy at all. My four cats, for instance, are valued family members. I spend more on their health and well-being than on my own. I would be a very unhappy person if I didn't have a warm furry body curled up in my lap, purring her little heart out. My bed would be a very lonely place if my Josie-cat didn't purr me to sleep. Nothing beats a cat. Inside cats don't lower the value of anything. They raise the value astronomically.
