Do you have recommendations on what I should do and see in Scotland? I'll be in Edinburgh, Glasgow, and Inverness, each for just a couple of days. I want to see some castles and some of the countryside as it looks gorgeous in all the pics. What else do you recommend?

You know what honey you really have to stop off in Stirling. That is where I am from and it is between and north of Edinburgh and Glasgow - about half an hours drive from both and full of history. I did have lots of photos of the castle etc but with just changing laptop I don't have a copy of it yet I am afraid.
This link should tell you a little about places like Stirling Castle , Wallace Monument and Bannockburn Heritage Centre amongst others!

If you decide to visit let me know! Either way have a great time!

Hi mummymo. I haven't heard of Stirling but I shall look it up. We will be traveling from Edinburg to Glasgow and back, I think. Also, we will visit Inverness. We definitely want to see castles and countryside. I appreciate all your input on this.

We will actually be driving through that area and want to catch a look at Nessie. We are excited about visiting Scotland for the first time. The pictures make it look so green, lush, and beautiful.

That is so cool! Maybe when you arrive you'll be able to ask locals what sights are best to see. Often they will suggest things that aren't even on tourist pamphlets. The locals seem to know the best stopping points. At least that is what I've found when I've been in different countries.

I think you are right about asking the locals what are the best sights to see in a country. I'm late on doing my pre-vacation research, but I'm sure we'll still see some great sights. Scotland, here we come!

WOW! How cool that you got to go to Scotland! I would love to go there one of these days.
Did you take lots of castle pics? Are you going to do a slideshow on AC? I'd love to see the pics if you do!

We just returned last night and our trip to Scotland was lovely. I did take some pictures of castles. It is hard to imagine but there are castles everywhere there. I have never tried to do a slideshow at AC. Maybe I should check that out. I think they don't allow pictures of already identified sites as there are copyrights on them. I submitted a picture with my article on Japan at AC and they removed the picture and never said why. I think it was because it was a well known public place there.
Anyway, I'll have to check the AC slideshow thing out. Take care, Sunny.

i live in scotland. i grew up here. Personally i think the sign at the border should say " abandon hope all ye who enter here". Its one of the dullest places there is to live. very little happens here. Still i guess if you were comeing in a few months not only would you be bored to tears you'd also be eaten alive by insects.
assuming that hasn't put you off... Inverness is pointless. it's a an overgrown village. If you like your hills drive down through glencoe and fort William. there should be snow on them right so so they're kinda picturesque. Edinburgh has a couple of galleries worth visiting. i used to live there and i recommend the fruitmarket gallery and the gallery of modern art.

I appreciate your views of your country. We just returned home last night and I must say that we found Scotland to be magical. The hills, trees, sheep, beautiful old architecture, and pure history of the country is astounding! We spent a few days in Inverness with friends. It was very cold, rainy, and windy! We did see snows on the hills as we rode the train from Inverness back to Edinburgh. The sights were lovely and quite picturesque. We did not get to visit the 2 sites you mention--the fruitmarket gallery or the gallery of modern art. We just couldn't fit everything in to our trip.
I must say that it was during my visit to Scotland that I actually wanted to read about history, it's just so awesome there.

i'm glad you enjoyed it. for me hills, more hills and endless hills filled with bogs aren't that rewarding. more threatening and slightly stifling. for me ctiy scapes and industrial architecture are so much more uplifting. i'm not sure what route the Inverness train takes to Edinburgh after the bridge but you probably cam close to grangemough. one of my 'best views in Scotland'.
While its also a town grangemouth is primarily a vast petrochemical complex and scotlands one oil refinery. during the day its impressive but at night its awe inspiring. Other views i like are, watching the tankers edge in and out of flotta oil terminal in the Orkney islands, though that takes binoculars, watching the wind turbines on gigha (although the ones on the M6 south of Preston are much better. If you've seen 28 days later you see these ones in that). But if you really have to have your landscapes free of mankind then i guess i would give you Sandwood bay as a good view

Yes, we very much enjoyed seeing all the buildings and history there. I think Scotland is a magical place. All the people we met there were just lovely people also.
