I cant realy offer a conducive response to that, but I will recommend a great book containing usefull knowledge and vocabulary structure by a brilliant man. 'the stuff of thought' by Steven Pinker.

I have a pretty good vocabulary. I did nothing special to get it. So the only thing I can recommend is to read as many books as you can. I am an avid reader and have learned most of the words I know just from that simple act. If you read enough books you do not even have to bother to look the words up, because you can see what they mean most of the time from the context of the word. Also, in novels, which I mainly read, they often use the same words over and over, so if you do not understand it the first time, there will be many more instances with the same word.

In order to improve my vocabulary, I take notice of words that I use frequently, visit dictionary.com, then type the word into the thesaurus section. I find the words that I think would be most useful, then write the word on my dry erase board with a brief definition. I noticed that I subconsciously memorize the word and integrate it into my vocabulary simply by having it present in my room.
