Rent increase during recession?

This afternoon the landlord informed me there are rent increases in the building, as there are every year. But does this seem like a logical course of action on the owners behalf? Increasing rent during a recession seems to me like a bad idea, and tenants wont stand for it. I hope.. What would you do in this case, or what do you think about it in general?

In the time of recession it is natural to feel the heat of inflation also. We have lesser earning and the prices around us starts increasing.
Well your owner is increasing the house rent. On other side your earning is same. So it is difficult to adjust. I suggest u and ur owner come to the common terms. Which is agreeable to both of you and there is win-win situation.
