Right here on the island there is a big "stink" (no punt intended) regarding food that is prepared using imported fertilizer containing human feces. The issue is divided along several lines with the farmers saying that the fertilizer is cheaper and more effective than the other inorganic fertilizer but having a very high odour ..
Others are concerned about the implications for health upon consumption and finally there are those who would feel more comfortable if the feces were locally derived
What is your take on the issue ? Are you bothered by this fact ? or do you belive like I do that some of the best vegetables have been grown by manure .lol Or are you concerbed about the source of the feces

people have been using manure for years for gardens, veggies & flowers. i don't ever think about manure when i go to buy a big ol' fresh ripe tomato at the farmer's market. maybe i should. lol.

Well, my friend, we'll be going down together. I was raised on food grown with cow manure. Talk about HUGE, delicious tomatoes!!! And watermelons as sweet as sugar. I don't know this for sure, but I think my Dad might still be using cow manure in his small garden & everybody brags on how delicious his veggies are!!! So, if we can safely use cow manure....why not human??? Does it sound gross??? Oh hell YESSSSS!!! But the results are what we're looking for & as we all know, we humans are fulla sh*t!!!

I wouldn't see what the big deal is. If you do research on Milorganite it's fertilizer that comes as a byproduct from Milwaukee's waste treatment plants. I can assure you some of that waste is probably human feces. Though using feces is supposed to be bad practice if it's processed it's no big deal? My MIL used to tell me about how they'd bury up the old outhouses and then plant gardens over them.

A lot of Fertilizer contain, Human feces and we don't even know it.But as we Jamaican saying what we don't know won't hurt we.
A lot of Fertilizer have bad odor, now a days i don't know what it contains but a lot of farmer are really up set.
An the other hand i don't think company would really use human feces to make fertilizer, even though its a money making thing.
A lot of the best vegetable are grown with mature, and mature is the best an cheapest fertilizer their is.

I can appreciate that we have been eating foods grown by fertilizers that contain animal faeces and gross as that sounds it doesn't disgust me as much as the idea of consuming something that was fertilized by human faeces. I know it probably wouldn't affect our health as much as our minds, Yuk! I couldn't do it, sorry!

Ok thanks for your opinion .YOu are right on one count it is gross when you think about it it may not cause us any harm but just the thought picks at something in you .I however dont believe that there will any repercussions for our health because much of our faces actually ends up in the soil which grows our food anyway,so it is virtually the same thing

As far as I concerned, farmers usually use animal manure as fertilizers for vegetables and not from humans. However, animals like cow, goat and other cattle eats grasses so basically they are vegetarian. So best grown vegetables are considered organic :)

I'm not sure about using fertilizer containing human feces, I might not agree to that, thats kinda weird. We used to make a garden every year, and we used chicken litter as a fertilizer, it didn't smell too good either, but we got alot of nice vegetables out of it.

Huh ew that seems kind of cannibalistic, I know that we wouldnt be able to taste it, but its just the thought of using an actual human face or bones to fertilize our food I dont know, but its just really weird to me, no disrespect to anyone, but I understand why some might find it a bit offensive or strange and if I was offered food that I knew was fertilized using human remains I defintly would not want to eat it.

Hey there! I would never, ever in my life, eat vegestables or fruits grown with fertilizers containing human feces. I am worried about the source of the feces. Humans eats various foods, vegestables, fruits, meets, etc., etc.. Unlike animals who eat grass and feeds as their only source of food. Let's eat organic. Have a nice day. Happy posting!!

I don't think it is a good idea to eat vegetables and fruits that were grown through the use of human feces. Just having the thought of it makes me already lose my appetite. I think it is not a good practice because we never know the source of those "things." I have read in Wikipedia that human feces may be used as fertilizer but still I don't go for it because it is still preferred by more people to use animal feces or manure. It was termed there as "humanure." "Humanure" is a neologism designating human excrement (feces and urine) that is recycled via composting for agricultural or other purposes.
Humanure is not traditional sewage that has been processed by waste-treatment facilities, which may include waste from industrial and other sources; rather, it is the combination of feces and urine with paper and additional carbon material (such as sawdust). A humanure system, such as a composting toilet does not require water or electricity, and when properly managed does not smell. Humanure may be deemed safe for humans to use on crops if handled in accordance with local health regulations, and composted properly.
At the end of the day even if the Wikipedia states that human manure or "humanure" can be used as fertilizer still I don't think it is a good kind of "recycling." I am sure a lot will agree with me. And besides there are more animals than human so why not just use their manures?

Feces is feces. Animal or human, you can get sick. I personally don't like using manure for anything, but it's a great way grow plants! Taking something so worthless and stinky and turning it into a useful way to enhance growing is a gift. So, I guess we shouldn't look at the gift horse's rear too harshly!

Recently, my mom collects my father and my urine to irrigate the plants she planted at our backyard. She believes that will be effective. For me, it is kind of gross. Some people actually believe that will work though.

Hi ronnyb! Oh my, I think that I do not want to know what kind of manure or feces the farmers are using. I am for inorganic but I guess I will be concerned now about the source of the feces. Oh my, I might not be able to eat anymore. Yikes!
Take care and blessings to you!

Fertilizers contain animal's feces which we eat right now. We in our country used cow feces to grow crops. People say that human feces would also turn into a good manure or dung. This help growing crops and killing unwanted things in the field.
I won't see any bad things using human feces into that too!
