My dog, Secret had eaten his breakfast and been outside into my back garden. I was feeding my toddler son in his highchair. Magic, my other dog was sitting on my sofa. All of a sudden I noticed Secret do some dog mess on my son's play mat. I said "no" and put him in my garden. He had just been outside so I wonder why he did that on my son's mat. Has anyone got any idea of why my dog did that? Thanks

Possibly a dominance thing, over the child. Jealous, wanting your attention. Perhaps he wasn't finished outside yet. Did you call him in?

He was probably claiming your toddler's mat as his territory. Perhaps he has a thing about the child, in that he gets a lot of your attention, and he thought if he messed up his mat, then he would draw attention to himself. Either that, or there is some odour from your son, on the playmat. I'm not sure. Brightest Blessings.

Hi maxine! Oh my, Secret is naughty! LOL! But what a mess he did! Maybe he is trying to get your attention. I really don't know. I guess that dogs do that wherever they can. Take care and have a great day! lovelots..faith

It may be jealousy. I had a fiest terrior who was so jealous of our granddaughter that I finally had to get rid of him. He was six months old and had been around her since she was two weeks old. When she started to crawl and walk he got overly protective of his water and food dishes plus his toys and bit her in the face. He went down the road after that incident but before that he would pee on the area in front of her toy box, on her beanbag chair but then he would want to sleep next to her. I tried working with him but when he bit her it was done. He bit her in the face just below her eye. I gave him to an elderly man who had no family and it was a perfect fit. I did not want to have him put down as he was a young dog but I did not trust him with our granddaughter after that.

Could have been just an accident. They do happen at times. Or it could have been some jealousy or maybe he was mad. Keep an eye on him and see if there is pattern. Hopefully it was just an accident and it won't happen again. Time will tell what the true story was.

Sounds like he wanted attention even if it means getting negative attention.

Possibly due to the scent on the mat is the only reason I can think of if he's never done this prior to now. HAPPY POSTINGS FROM GRANDPA BOB !!~

I'm no expert, but if I were a betting man, I have a small wager on jealousy!

Hi maximax8, That is veru unusual, maybe he is felling left out or feeling a bit jealous, I have no idea as I don't have any dogs so not sure of their behavier. Tamara

I think your dog was probably trying to make a point - that he needs the same attention that you are giving your son! They do get jealous when they think they are missing out on something don't they?

i also have a dog, a medium size one. she is very naughty, she's all black and has beautiful eyes and a big tail. every day she does something naughty, pulls out the flowers, runs after the cat, barks at midnight and weaks me. so, , even she is not a good dog, i love her and she's one of the family.
