Is the appeal of the "album" decreasing?

I was browsing Digg the other day, and came across this post: http://www.cracked.com/article_17075_every-album-ever.html which I found to be pretty funny. I was thinking about how with iTunes and Amazon and other online music stores, you don't need to buy the entire album, you can just buy the song that you like. And let's not forget downloading! A lot of people just download one song and neglect the rest of the album. Because of these factors, I'm wondering if you think that the overall quality of albums have been decreasing over the years? There certainly isn't as much as an emphasis on albums as their used to be... and unless the song that you liked was released as a single, you were usually forced to buy the whole album for just one song. I've noticed that the "hit singles" on a record sound remarkably better than the rest of the tracks - is this just bias or because there isn't so much of a drive to fill the album with great content? I'm curious to what everyone else has to say about this matter.

I'm pretty sure it is, but I think there will always be a place for albums. In popular music I think it is common for on song to be better this might be just because in popular music there is stronger pressure placed on a radio/movie/commercial worthy song (basically to make money) as far as pop music, and money albums might be on their way out but in other areas I think albums are fine mix albums are very popular esp in electronic music (respected DJ's pick good songs and mix them smoothly together) often these albums/cds have many (all very good and carefully selected songs) also the "rarity" of some genres of music make buying albums neccessary sometimes (some music is too underground to be bough on itunes or other sites. although there are sites especially for electronic and indie music So yes and no, albums are also good if a band doesn't want to be pigeonholed (have one song represent them and have people judge them by one song) albums are a good way to make sure that a song doesn't get taken out of context, as certain songs can kind of artisticlly balance eachother out
