Numerous worms squirming all over my scalp and I,unnerved and snappy, crying like a baby! Yes, that's what I dreamt. The reason? My computer had been infected with worst kind of viruses! They attacked me in hundreds and thousands and I had a trying time fixing them! My friend guided me through the whole procedure and I finally, could avoid formatting. This is just for my friend, I couldn't have done without him. Thank you so much. To make a discussion, have you been bugged with virus recently? Are you wiser after that and follow a routine cleaning regime now? What steps do you follow to usually to ensure safety? Happy keeping yourself and your computer bugs free!

I know that feeling Mimpi and i must say i too have had my share of it. Over a year ago, all those creepy crawling, bugs worms, viruses..all over gigabytes of data on all my drives includin my pen drive. The mouse would keep jumping and disappear from the screen. Then the system would hang. I installed the anti virus and boy was i shocked. The whole day, one message after another kept popping up on my screen. Worst was still to follow and the system files were corrupt. My system admistrator took the system and cleaned it out, but you know what, i had lost more than 50 percent of my data. Why ? He decided to reinstall the OS and formatted the disk. I did not get enough time to move the relevant files. I realised it 's better to be safe than sorry. I make sure i have an updated anti-virus running all the time now so that i take care of this problem. And further more, if there are some particular issues caused, then i get to the root of the problem and try and solve instead of having to go what i went throught the first time. The only thing is that there are so many new viruses coming out there, that it becomes difficult to keep track and the anti virus updation comes much later. Great to know you have a friend who helped you out doing this. I know that the process can be long and painful. Hope you did not loose too much data in the process ?

No I did not. Courtesy: my friend. Actually it was all there intact. But, I thought I would have to format it for it was infected to the core and the system files were started to be affected! Avast is pretty good and also the Haute Secure, which My friend Eric had told me about. The best thing is that I learnt so many new things in the process! Computers is unbelievable!

That is great to know that you did not loose data in the process. At the same time there is so much we learn in the process. Some things are pretty easy to do, but seem or are made to seem complex. There is an ocean of stuff out there which we can learn with. I'm starting to learn more and more things every day. There are things which we must do regulary and be aware of at the same time to have our systems and data protected. These are some of the basic things that we should keep ourselves aware and updated with. Using Anti Virus software which is constantly updated. Remove spyware. Not opening Junk mail. not opening attachments we are not sure about. Using strong passwords Downloading only from trusted and secure sources. And following a golden rule for the internet. "When you are not sure don't" Using our firewall properly.

That's a great thing you have shared! 1. cleaning every fortnight and getting rid of unnecessary folders and files and temporary internet files 2. taking backups of downloaded files and keeping the computer with minimum load of music, movie files... 3. Zone Alarm or Haute Secure is must. 4. wise use of computer..

oh So, this is the reason for your vanishing act mimpi.I was a bit concerned . I am terribly scared that virus would attack my computer because I can do nothing if it happens and it is very difficult for me to get a reliable person to look into it and my son is on an outstation project and barely finds time for relaxation. Nowadays, I visit many sites and sometimes the computer is very slow to load. Once it restarted on its own and then screamed at me that the system had encountered a serious error as though I were responsible for it.Actually I had asked it to standby but it decided to have a mind of its own and behaved rebelliously and then lectured me. Honestly, I got so scared that some virus must have attacked it .So far , so good but of late it has become slow. It is hardly 3 years since this was bought and so can you give me some tips about cleaning the system[myself] periodically? There are of course some antivirus safety guards in the comp , already installed by my son.

Yes, that's the reason, I am still struggling dear! Getting the right kind of Antivirus software and keeping up with the while-born viruses is really tough. I will send you the steps once I get little settled with it. Meanwhile, let's enjoy the changes that mylot is hoping to bring. We have always talked about the incentives and loyalty bonus. Let's see what it comes up with. May be tasks that pay!

I've been plagued with viruses on my office desktop PC for quite some time now and had to have it replaced on a number of occasions. Prior to being here, I only ever had one serious issue with a PC virus before and that was several years back. On the laptop, I have a few different things running at all times to monitor for viruses so I'm pretty safe on this front I think! (Touch wood! lol) I also use a cleaner program that removes cookies and other crap on a regular basis as well. I don't like the sounds of your dream though, I must say!

*Shudders* Ooooh, just reading the first part of this made the skin on scalp kind of crawl. Yuck! I have only had a problem with viruses on my computer once, and that was a very long time ago. I have my computer set up to run short scans on and off throughout the day. And, it does a thorough one in the middle of the night. And, since my son installed whatever I am using now, I don't even find quarantined files and folders on here anymore. I am glad you got your computer fixed!

Deleting the temporary files and accumulated cookies twice a week and updating your anti virus daily will help you in a big way.The by product is the improvement in the speed of your machine.

I agree bala. Uninstalling unnecessary files and reducing load from machine helped in the speed. I got rid of all movie and music files just to increase the speed.

Fortunately, I didn't lose any data. Thanks to my friend who guided me through each shot and actually made me follow the commands. I had no idea what he was telling me bit followed him blindly. And guess what, it acted like a miracle! I think, we should run a regular cleaning regime before we lose it to the bugs. i used to do everything but my antivirus definition was not updated! Now i am wiser.

Hi mimpi dear! I am glad that it was just a dream and equally happy that your computer has been rid off the virus. Our computer (actually my husband's computer since my laptop has already retired..haha) was infected by a virus few weeks ago but I didn't worry a bit since i leave the worrying to my husband. haha..He fixed it up but was still a little slow and asked his friend for tips and advice. Fortunately, it got fixed without having to call a computer technician to fix it. I think my husband has a new system or whatever it is called (haha..) to protect the computer from the new virus lurking and ready to attack. Yikes! Take care and blessings to you! lovelots..faith

I have also experienced these numerous worms a few months back when my computer had to be formatted. I lost all my data and had to start from scratch. So I know how frightening these creatures are. Yikes, what a description. Im usually not grossed out by worms and other creepy crawlies but of course having them on my head or something changes things. I know that they do have a unique stench that could be hard to wash off by just a regular shampoo. As for the virus on my computer, Im not really sure. I dont get prompted that there's a virus as often as before. Makes me wonder whether my anti-virus is just letting all the virus in or there are just no virus on the sites that I go to, which are of course impossible. The browser also stops all pop-ups so the virus could be located there and not on the actual site that Im visiting. But I am confident with my anti-virus cause it does prompt me when I inserted my usb fresh from a computer shop. That's when the warning signals keep flashing.

Sorry to hear about your problem.I think you can backup all your useful data in usb or movable drive. Then format your drive, this is a little cruel but it will clean your computer thoroughly. Then you can restore your data to the computer but remember scan your usb or removable drive which holds your data at first. Then you need higher standard of security for your newly-installed system. For example, you can install Kavasky as an anti-virus and comodo as firewall. You can also use Returnil or Powershaow to protect your system from viruses.I also suggest you have a try on open source opearating systems such as linux-ubuntu-for example is one of the best choice, they are much more immunize to common viruses which is targeted to attack windows OS.

Well coming back to computers ,I have not had such problems thankfully..I have an anti virous installed, and has a back up team(my two sons) who are able to tackle with these viruses, much better than me......ha..ha....

Yikes! That sounds like a creepy dream! But I haven't had a virus since I switched to Macs. I now use a MacBook Pro with OSX Leopard and dual boot with Ubuntu Linux.
