I have known some people who are extremely careful with their money and they do all the right things. Such people are able to stretch their money out to a great extent, save and own assets and live well..I myself am not consistent, sometimes i am very careful and sometimes i get carried away and buy things on an impulse...The other day i visited a relative, and she was busy cutting up the old calender pages into neat strips so that she can use the back ,blank side for writing. She uses these strips for writing out her shopping lists etc;She makes use of other household wastes and comes up with some great ideas, besides being very careful with her spending.. Friends any of you have any idea that is helpful in making your money grow and go a long way? please share with all of us..

Recycling is always a good way of saving. I have done that for a long time. But if you say you buy things on an impulse, I would recomend doing what I do. I go shopping with a list. I discovered that decades ago. We had money problems and one day we went to the super. When we got to the cashier, the cart was full. I decided to separate there the superfluous from the musts. The groceries for the month costed the same as the things we had put "just because". We left them there and from that time, I take my list. If I go to buy shoes, I buy shoes. IT doesn´t mean that I won´t window shop. But I will NOT buy. That has helped me a lot these last years. I´m a widow and retired and, of course, money doesn´t come along as it did.

Hi marguicha, thanks a lot for your respose, i agree that making list and more importantly sticking to buying what is on your list is ver essential , and the only way to curb impulsive buying..

I recently opened up an online savings account with ING Direct because their saving accounts have no fees and have much better rates than just about any other bank out there, especially banks in your area. I'm gaining more interest there than I would at my own local bank. I decided I should put some money in the bank and let it grow awhile so it's not just sitting in my checking account doing nothing. Secondly I really recycle what I use. Like your friend, I tend to reuse paper several times before I put it in the recycling bin. Also, when shopping I use coupons if I have them, regardless of what the amount off is and I try to avoid shopping when hungry because that makes you buy more than you had planned. I also try to stick to shopping lists. That helps me stay on track. And, if I'm thinking about impulse buying, I try not to stay in a certain area too long or avoid it al together if I know I'll be tempted to buy something. If I start thinking too much about something I know I do not need, I walk away and finish doing what I need to do. Also, save your change. Put it in a piggy bank or a jar or something and whenever it gets full, cash it in. That money may not seem like a lot but it really does add up. Heck, even picking up change you see on the ground and putting it into a jar can add up after awhile.

Hi highflyingxangel, thanks a lot lot for some excellent tips and suggestions. I am going to put all of them into practice. I do put away small change, but i need to cut down on impulsive shopping and recycle anything that can be used. It does make sense to put money in a Fixed deposit and earn interest on it, instead of letting it lie around in a checking account -all the best

HI KIran how are you/I was wondering where you were and suddenly I saw this discussion among those started by friends.Coming to your question Kiran I am normally decently careful;I would not buy anything unnecesary on impulse but whenit is sarees I just splurge .But I reserve some special pocket money for this and have no guilt feelings. My purchase would be done ONLY when I HAVE pocket money to splurge .Otherwise I am fine. But, I woud not reuse, recycle things like the lady you have pOinted out.I feel I can spend that time more productively and I won't do this.I would rahter try to earn better and save than recycle meticulously and save.BUt,I also do write in scraps of paper -the white envelopes with dividends and interest cheques]But I WON'T BE organized with this. They are just lying in a bin. I just would pick what i need ,use and throw.

Hi kala, i had been out of town for 4-5 days and was not able to use the net...I think it is an art and an inbuilt nature that makes some people so very careful with money and other things too. I have seen some well to do people , who are extra careful with their way of spending and generally very thrifty ...May be thats how they became so well to do...I too am like you, not very regular in my saving habits or in looking for opportunities to save and conserve..

i meal plan for two weeks at a time so i only go grocery shopping 2 weeks at a time (if we forgot something - we make due til the next time.) we make a lot of soup and home made bread and other cheap meals. i work for a non profit place so i re-use everything from files to paper. we also have a small part time job which we make $15 a week which we save as well.

I do alot to help save money. I will shop at dollar tree for stuff that i know cost alot more else where. I buy things in store brand instead of name brand. When I get home in the afternoon i try to get my son to wear underwear instead of a diaper or pull up that way it saves me a couple to last longer. I drink water more so i don't buy all those expensive soda's. I buy bread and lunch meat for my work lunches so i dont go out to eat spending tons of money. I buy used stuff like clothes and shoes. I am sure there is other stuff i do but i will say that it works wonders for me. Doing these little things has saved me alot of money. I started doing alot of this about a year ago. Before i started I only had a hundred dollars in my name and was living practically pay check to pay check. I will not say how much money i have now. But with my savings i am planning to save up to get my own place.

Hi jessi, thats wonderful. i too never believe in branded stuff or shopping at expensive stores.Eating out is very expensive and one can cut down a lot if one is careful. I am happy for you that these frugal measures have helped you towards planning to buy a home for yourself- all the best

if u r serious for the answer, i may help u out. i m a stock market trader and i help people to make portfolios for their investment. i dont know how much money u like to invest and prepare to hold for next 3-5 yrs, but we may work on an example. think u hv rs.100 , now make it 5 parts of rs20. one part should remain in ur bank as a fixed deposit. 2nd part should be invested in gold. 3rd part should be invested in equity in stock market or in any *** rated mutual fund, 4th part should be invested in property. it may be a land or a house anything. the last 20 should be with u to invest it in insurance. hope u will like my idea. for any other queries write me message.

Hi, thanks a lot for all those details. I think it is a very wise way of investing and it makes a lot of sense. But in my honest opinion most people do not save even 1 percent of what they earn, always putting it off until it is too late..
