Hugging - is it a habit or tradition?

I often see people when they met, they either give a handshake, a quick kiss on the check or give a big hug. Why do people hug? I don't see the benefit of hugging others especially those who are strangers. What does hugging means to you? I still think a handshake is more appropriate.

I agree... especially if the person you are meeting is a stranger, or someone you haven't met before.. Hand shakes still makes an appropriate act....

Hugging is an adopted culture from the west. We only hug within the family and not to people just known to us. Maybe a handshake is appropriate.

I think hugging is a tradition like handshake...I am from China. So A handshake is more appropriate to me. ^_^...Different countries have different culture. So there is a different way to express friendship.
