Why do the lives of celebrities fascinate us?

Personally, I do read magazines such as People and Cosmo and I watch those ridiculous shows on VH1 and E!; and I love them! But, why do you think we are so fascinated with what's going on between Brad and Angelina or is Tom and Katie's marriage just a publicity stunt, more so than say what's the latest news in politics? (obviously this doesn't apply to everyone). Any thoughts?

Because people tend to live vicariously through celebrities instead of getting out and enjoying their own lives to the fullest!

Because they have the means to do things many people feel they cannot. They can take risks because they are more financially able to pay the consequences if necessary. Also, they are able to get away with a lot more than the average person!

They can do pretty much anything (to an extent) and we wish that we could live like this also. They can buy anything and everything and I think a lot of people watch them and look up to them for the newest trends and attitudes. Its kind of crazy if you think about how all of these people are idolizing a person that is mostly just like them.
