I am just barely surviving on a computer that is 6 years old and has 445 MB of RAM. I was wondering if there was anything I could do to prolong it's life just by a little in order to wait a bit to buy a new computer.

It is very better to increase the RAM capacity rather than buying a new one and it will cost little only.Uninstall the occasionally used software or program and free up the disk space. If you feel that they system is infected with threats, reinstall the OS, it will speed up the system for certain time.

Interesting amount of ram, usualy sticks are 256, 512, 1gig But I have seem this before. I would suggest you just reinstall the OS to make the system run faster for the time being. After which I would install only the basic applications, a nice antivirus such as AVG, maybe msn if you use that. But dont bother with all those extra programs people tend to load there computer up with, They mainly slow things down.
PS: A usb memory stick would supply an extra drive for storage space while its plugged in but do nothing for actual preformance.
