How tidy are your benches? Are they always clean and clear as much as possible? Do you clean up as you go when preparing meals or baking? I have very little bench space where I am now so there is always something lying around. I try to clean up as I go when I'm baking - I find it's necessary cos there's no room otherwise. I find I can tackle the washing up more easily as I go rather than be faced with a mountain at the end of the day. How good or bad are your organizational skills in the kitchen?

Sometimes I think I would like to have a dish washer. But when I think it through, I realsise that I would still have to pack it, unpack it and put the dishes away. I think it's easier to just do them myself.

Bummer re the dishwasher catdla....and good oh for the training you've put in place. I've always had issues with dishwashers using too much water. I get argued down now with users telling me they use less water than a day's washing up. That's for the appliance...they are not counting all the water used to rinse the dishes and pre wash the utensils...both necessary to get things clean...BIG THUMBS DOWN!

I've been living in my current home for three years, and I have a dishwasher. It's only been used once, and I'd rather have another cupboard in it's place. Reason? None of my cookware can go in there! I have a combination of cast iron, no-stick and annodized aluminum. My beloved cast iron turns into a rust bucket in there, and the manufacturers of the others warn against it. The pots and pans are the biggest part of the clean up, in my opinion. At meal time I have each member of the family trained to wash their own dish and utensils. So, other than those pots and pans, there really isn't much elso to clean.

I can clean but they continue to get cluttered somehow, I don't have alot of space at all. And it doesn't' take alot to make it look cluttered. I want a clean tidy room in my kitchen but with my husband and people who come over it can be impossible since they leave their stuff around instead of tossing it in the trash.

My family leaves trash on the counters and it drives me crazy! I've started returning the trash to whoever left it and saying, "I don't know why you're saving this, but it needs to get rinsed out or put away." S-l-o-w-l-y people are starting to throw their own trash out, at least when I'm around.

Mummymo remains firmly on her backside! I am afraid I am lost in the kitchen these days tickle - too terrified I get burned or drop all the food and ruin it. I did make a cheese omelette the other day that was out of this world .... I left the dishes for David though but I was thoughtful and left them steeping in the sink! lol xxx

What a sweetheart you are... A young bloke once made me an omelette that really surprised me. It looked awful as he put it together but it tasted wonderful. Use 1/4 cup (more or less) of chopped, cooked chicken, 1 dessert spoon full of finely chopped green capsicum and as much cheese as you like. Remember the pepper and salt. Just mix it all together for an omelette that is out of this world (it's the only way I like capsicum.

Yummy! though to be honest I had to look up capsicum! lol Turns out it is what we call peppers - I love peppers! lol Next time I am fit I shall most definitely try this and let you know how I get on! I used to make a breakfast omelette for the kids with mushrooms, bacon and sausage! They loved it! xxx

i'm pretty neat with my kitchen too, it's all a matter of multitasking, and it's easier to move around and find things when you actually know where they are! i love the idea of the mushrooms, bacon breakfast, i have a variation of it that i saw from jamie oliver, just put strips of bacon, mushrooms, tomatoes, cut onions, eggs (sunny-side up) in one pan and add salt and pepper, the pan is kinda jam-packed but you can slide it all off the pan and just put it on a plate for a really good breakfast medley!

Hi MsTickle! My kitchen is cleaned every time we use it because for one, I can't stand a dirty kitchen and second is because I don't want bugs. lol I'm a clean and organized freak to a fault but I wouldn't have it any other way. We have a right nice sized kitchen but it gets cluttered if I let it go so I make sure it doesn't.

I feel that I have better things to do than be cleaning and tidying all the time. I would love to have everything spotless and pristine always but I can't do that no matter what so I accept that things will be untidy till I clean up.

I understand and agree! I just have this rule of thumb that certain places in my home have to be clean or I'm not happy and that is, my kitchen, bathrooms, pet bowls and my bed. Other than that, it can wait! lol

My kitchen is one of the messiest rooms in the house. And I don't do dishes. So I cook, everyone eats, and then the loading and unloading of the dish washer becomes the chores of my husband and my oldest daughter. If they don't clean up after dinner I don't cook the next day. I have about 10 feet of counter space but a good 5 of it taken up by kitchen appliances, canisters, and cooking utensils. I have a little ceramic plaque that reads "A messy kitchen is the sign of a fantastic cook" I guess that makes me Rachel Ray. lol

I only wash up once a day to save water....sometimes, if I'm lazy, it will be once in two days But I do stack the dishes neatly on the sink. Some things live on my kitchen benches...it's just easier to access things when They are within easy reach. If I put everything away the cupboards will be over filled and things won't be easy to get out.

I assume benches are counters. Anyway, I have a bit of counter space but my toaster, radio, paper shredder and microwave oven take up a lot of space. (The paper shredder should be in the den anyway and I could find another place for the radio). When I feel energetic I get all my ingredients measured out and the rest put away and I wash up as I go along. Other times I just drag myself along and at the end there is a mountain of dishes to be washed and stuff to be put away. It is better to be organized.

Oh, Miss Tickle I had a good laugh. I guess neither of us is a kitchen goddess. I don't know why we call it a counter because it is usually afixed to the wall of the kitchen and we stand in front of it. Some people also have what we call an island which is a counter in the middle of the kitchen and you can stand in front of it or behind it or walk around it. I don't have one and I don't like islands either and yet they seem to be all the rage.

My toaster has it's own little alcove but there is lots of stuff around: my mug tree, a little tray for daily meds and assorted bits and pieces, paper towel tree, glass containers for treats and pasta, salt pig, sandwich toaster, container with cooking tools, water dispensers, mountain of plastic stuff that is left out because the drawer is not only full but hard to access. There are stools with shopping bags under them and the bag of goat food on top. Lucy's plastic dinosaur lives on that window ledge but the cat knocks it down so it spends more time on the floor, rubbish bin and recycle bin, water dish....the mess goes on. We call it a bench as in a work bench.A counter is something one person stands behind while serving the person standing in front.

LOL--I'm a neurotically organized person and hate clutter anywhere, not just the kitchen. I don't have much space in my kitchen either which is all the more reason I have things organized. I also clean as I go along while I'm cooking so I don't have much to clean at the end of the day--especially helpful to do when cooking a holiday meal which means using a lot more cookware, bowls to mix things, etc

LOL--my bedroom isn't even really a bedroom but an arched alcove...as for cookware...I actually have a LOT of bakeware/cookware I bought years and years ago..Revere ware, Cuisinart....I even have some of my great-grandmother's Corning Ware glass mixing bowls...they are all in prime condition despite the age of them. That stuff last forever...thank goodness. Anyway...it's funny..out of curiosity I was pricing the newer line of some cookware on line and no way did I pay anything they are asking for it now

I've allowed myself one "junk drawer" in my kitchen where I can toss anything I don't have a place for. Keeps me happy lol. But yeah, I have everything in a certain order that it sometimes drives my hubby nuts because I've got to have it just right. Ok, so I'm a little monkish, but eh, I'm me lol. Namaste Anora

When I'm cooking, I try to wash the dishes that I am using so it won't add to what I have to wash when we get through eating. I hate a messed up kitchen, but I've learned those dishes will be there when I get ready to wash them! But it's nice to have the ones I had used cooking staring me in the face, too!

That's the theory I like to think operates in my kitchen but I can never get it to be the norm. I have to do smaller clean ups from day to day then occasional bigger clean-ups every few days and then a major clean up every once in a while. My kitchen does not work very well at being efficient. I'd love to be able to afford a new kitchen.

I do clean up as I go when I am the one cooking. If I am in the kitchen, I have to haveit clean when I start and clean when I am finished. Now, if my husband is the one doing the cooking, it is another story all together. He is the messy cook in the house!!

At our house we had a rule...the one who prepares dinner does not have to clean up. As I grew up and had my own place I had to do everything and so I would tidy as I went to save a huge job at the end. My last housemate also had the rule that the one who cooks doesn't have to clean...he would make such an awful mess....everywhere and it was a real punishment for me when he cooked...when I cooked I would tidy as I went so he had very little to do afterwards and nine times out of ten he wouldn't do it. When his Mum would visit for a holiday she would rouse on him but it made no difference.

I too let them air dry on the drainer and put away when I wash my next load of dishes. I have never heard that catla1 about the bacteria growing on the dishes dried with a cloth... I'll continue to stick to my way... Also I find the glasses don't get streaky then either...

I let my dishes dry in the dish drainer too. I was told once that bacteria and germs won't grow on clean dishes that are air drying, but it DOES grow on drying dish towels. Why wash a dish and then wipe it down with a germy dish towel? Works for me and gets me out of the kitchen sooner.

Depends on the day for me. Like today, it's a mess in my kitchen. I have had two sick children, and myself not feeling well and husbands been working nights this last week so it's not been taken care of so well this week. As I finish up with a few more posts, I have all intentions of getting in there and cleaning things up. For the most part, my kitchen is usually the cleanest in the house as I can't stand a pile of dishes, or a messy counter top. When, I am cooking and baking, I always clean before hand, and clean while I am going threw the process so that leaves less when the meal or baking is done for me to clean up.

Aww sweety, sorry to hear you are off colour and the kids not well...are they school aged? You must be truly unwell if you let your kitchen go because you sound like your kitchen is a focal point in your home...like...if the kitchen is clean and tidy the rest of the house is good too . I tend to work the other way. My bedrooms and lounge room are great but the bathroom, living room and kitchen definitely have that lived in look.

Thank you for your kind words. I have a 6 year old and an 18 month old. We've all had that crazy stomach bug, and it wasn't a pretty site. For the most part, all rooms are clean, expect for the living room/family room area, where the kids play and pull out everything, it's got that very well lived in look, as there is always something to step over, or trip over.

Like you, my friend, I have to be organised because I too have little space. I hate going back to clearing and washing up afterwards, when it's all piled up, anyway. So, I clear and wash up as I go, at stages through my preparation, cooking etc. For example, once the preparation is done, I'll clear and wash, and then, once the cooking is finished, I dish out the food or put the cakes to cool whilst I again wash up the cooking utensils and clear the sides. I go in steps all the way. It's nice only to have your crockery and cutlery to wash up after finishing eating, and when you don't feel so much like washing pots and pans. :) Brightest Blessings my friend. x
