What could a husband do when his wife is giving birth?

My wife will give birth next week. But now I'm almost thousands of kms far from her. Of course, I'll go back and be beside her at that moment. But I don't know what should I do at that moment. I ever heard that one of my colleagues had been smoking for almost three hours out side of delivery room when his wife was giving birth. Another one had been stolling for more than 5 hours. Someone said, the husband should takes her hand tightly. But, the male is not allowed for going in the delivery room. Do you have experiences of it as a husband? Or what was your husband's actions if you're a wife who had given birth?
