Well, almost all of us are aware of what corruption is. But to what an extent corruption could go and wear a vampiristic look you have not imagined perhaps. If not come to India. Nigeria stands first while India has the honor of being second in this category. This is like a maze, you do not know where it begins. Is it from the ministerial or bureaucratic level or from the grass root level? But know that India is doing better in this field very well. Now as this is no longer a secret to any one. I urge for your suggestion as to how we deal with it and wipe it out. Please feel free to air your opinions.

http://www.asianoffbeat.com/default.asp?display=844 According to this list, the Philippines is the most corrupt country in Asia. I'm not sure if it's an official list but even though some other list may say that we are not top 1 I wouldn't be surprised if we were still somewhere at the first few. Where in a really deep hole right now. Everyday our newspapers report on corruption, on bribery, etc. I have no idea how we would be able to solve this - reelection? But elect who? They're ALL the same. Even if we do have a change of government structure, what then? The same people would be in office, only their titles would change. I think that the only way to help our people is to promote education. But how? We're caught in a deadly cycle: we can't promote education because the people's money isn't directed to the right venues... Thanks for the response on my discussion!

On the link it said "In the poll, the higher the score, the less corrupt the country. Tied for No. 1 this year, with a “score” of 9.4 is Philippine, followed closely by Indonesia and Thailand. At the bottom, with a score of 1.20 is Singapore, which is also one of world's least corrupt countries." That means that Singapore is one of the least corrupt not only in Asia but also in the whole world. They have many laws and they implement them all very well! I think it's a great country :) I hope to visit it someday in order to experience how a good government runs a country and to see if their people are happy. I guess it's not really because we're Asians... may be it has something to do with our histories :)

Yes I read that and in the list India is at no.5. But I am sure it was 2nd in the world last year now again in another survey India's position has been shown as 47th. I am confused but it is totally deranged now. And yes we must kick our leaders to Singapore and ask them to learn how to run a country corruption free.

Kill them! LOL We have not rocket science to deal with this problem. The curruption is inside us. Think about it, would you not do the same when you will have the power? Most of the time you will because every one is doing. Who are the politicians? They come from us, they belong to us. If we can make your society think better and think about everyone then only this curse can be cured!

This is the first post I hope you did not find any problem.lol. And your suggestion is too negative to apply. Had things been so easier we would not strip ourselves in front of the world.

Corruption stems from greed. Greediness is partof the basic human nature. Irrespective of the country an individual belongs to and his/her needs, if a person decides to grow rich by hook or crook, no matter what, s/he will be definitely be part of a corruption transaction. This kind of transactions in huge number fuel rampant corruption. So,IMHO the only way to control corruption is to ask people to control the greediness that is residing in their personality.

I'm sure corruption exists in any country. It's human nature that we are never satisfied with what we have and we always want more. To some degree this is good, but we shouldn't let it get pass that degree. Govt can make this and that law to prevent it from happening, but what if the corruption is in the govt itself? Plus corruption never involves only two people, those that find out will be bribed too and there is no way their family doesn't know, but they also don't say anything because they are enjoying it. They can be put in jail, but the money won't be recovered, it's already spent. I don't see a way for us to wipe it out, but if I were to make the laws, I would make corruptors return the money. I would either make them work without pay or seize everything they and their family have. instead of putting them in jail, being fed by taxpayer's money. They are going to work for that food they eat and the cell they sleep in. Whatever work needs doing, they will sent there, as long as it doesn't require schooling (because we are not going to pay for their schooling, as they have stolen our money).

Very well put. I appreciate your analytical mind. Yes this is true that corruption can never be wiped out at any points of our lives as this has been keenly associated with the human nature but if wished could be brought to the controlled level. Thanks a lot.

I can't tell you how to wipe out corruption since my country is steeped in it, too. We have a few public officials that are there because they truly want to serve but probably 85% of them are in it for themselves and are as corrupt as a worm-eaten corpse. Even our elections are sometimes fixed--one senator, a former comedian, lost the election and sued. And what a surprise, votes began to show up that had been uncounted, some votes for the opposing candidate were declared invalid, all kinds of monkey business popped up and the comedian won.

It is quite surprising for me that even in the US things like this prevails. This is too unfortunate you know. Accepted that corruption can not be wiped up at any point of time but can be brought to the minimal level.

Great one of yours I can understand you really write well above my level of understanding.I take it you mean corruption and where is starts and where it finishes.Well all the time the systems are so loosly tied together and pay is poor it will continue. It is heart breaking to know some polititions live a life of luxury while the normal people cannot even afford a descent meal or live under plastic. To many people are out for themselves.selfish $$$$$$$

Hi Suzzy! Why send me all blush? Yours is far above of mine. On corruption you just know that those who get elected and are on the power chair are first and foremost concerned how to accumulate wealth. For they might not get a second chance. There are just few who are really committed but what purpose does a gallon of water would serve in the desert sands? Feel really helpless.

It seems to me that Indian authorities are very much corrupt and not likely to want to change any time soon. Corruption appears to be right through. There are the rich and there are the poor and a huge gap in between. I guess the richer ones take dominion over those who are poor and uneducated and basically are "running the show". The less wealthy aspire to that sort of power and a lot will go to any lengths to obtain it. The people at the "top" need to change in order for the rest of the system to follow by directing energy and funds in the right areas. How to change it? I don't know you would need some kind of revolution but it seems that there is a lack of resources and people are caught in a system that is very hard to get out of.

Rightly put. But resources are there - both human resource and natural resource but the problem is the public representatives are the worst. If you follow this link you will find now India doing a litl better whereas Australia is on top with 9.3 and India with 3.4.http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2008/09/23/europe/EU-Corruption-Index-Glance.php It is the system basically responsible for this state of the affair.

The simple and easy way to tackle corruption is to stay transparent. All the transactions, especially financial, have to be done in a transparent manner. To make a transaction transparent, you need to automize the transaction process. This way, we may not eradicate but can definitely reduce the levels of corruption.

Hello my friend krajibg Ji, So nice of you for starting such discussion. I think 'Education' could be one of the many instrument to set right. There has been lot many resolutions at UNO as well. I bring out some thing as below : http://www.unglobalcompact.org/AboutTheGC/TheTenPrinciples/anti-corruption.html "Transparency and Anti-corruption On 24 June 2004, during the UN Global Compact Leaders Summit it was announced that the UN Global Compact henceforth includes a tenth principle against corruption. This was adopted after extensive consultations and all participants yielded overwhelming expressions of support, sending a strong worldwide signal that the private sector shares responsibility for the challenges of eliminating corruption. It also demonstrated a new willingness in the business community to play its part in the fight against corruption" May God bless you and have a great time.

I had a whole page written here and it erased on me!...Probably a good thing or you would be bored!... I am well aware that corruption exists. Fortunately for me, I believe I live in a country where it is less than some places but nowhere is perfect. Since joining a world friends group a few years back, as I wanted to learn about different countries and their cultures and just generally everyday life, I have been shocked to say the least at what I have learned. I have heard that India is very corrupt. I also have a friend who lives in Africa and works for the police department. She claims they are more corrupt than the average citizen. She calls it the circus. What is a little corruption in a country where the penalty for not paying your TV license is stiffer than murder? I do believe that perhaps some corruption begins with the poor. They learn corrupt ways in order to survive. If you didnt have the basic survival tools, what would you do for your family? So from there it becomes learned. To safe guard what you do have becomes a fight for greed... So the poor want to be richer and the rich dont want to be any poorer. A catalyst for corruption. Terrorism, another form of corruption that I knew nothing about really til I met my friend in Sri Lanka, several years ago. I have talked to her as bomb blasts could be heard in the background. I cant imagine the incredible strength of her and her family. I really admire the Sri Lankan army for trying to wipe out the LTTE on their own. Them asking for peace is ludicrous. I have not heard of a peaceful terrorist. Only a corrupt one stalling for time to regain strength to rebuild and continue the destruction and corruption. I fear for her every day and wait eagerly every night for my msn light to light up with her name on it! I can tell many more stories but wont, my sisterinlaw has told stories from Pakistan where her father was once a prison guard. Amazing and shocking tales from all countries. Its too bad that the world could not share all resources among everyone, get rid of the terrorists, and give the poor the tools to learn survival rather than just supplying ready made food. GIve them a purpose and the ways to be self sufficient. I think a really smart person, who grew up in a really poor environment, has the abibility to be smart enough to learn to be corrupt to survive. The more you get, the more you want. If the system you have found is working, you bump it up a notch, and so corruption grows on!

This is too suffocating when you give more into the troubled water. Oh God according to the 'International Gerald Tribune" while India is with 3.5 (Govt. and business) UK stands tall wit 7.7. So yours is much much cleaner than ours. But unfortunately India has done well to improve the scenario to come to 5th position in Asia. I was too shocked to read that even the European countries were corrupt too. Hungary is the worst there. As for Police????? They are not as bad as in Africa but not good here too. Now corruption has percolated down to the department of Education too. Thanks Sandy.

We have much corruption here in the United States. I think it's one reason the comic book industry has done so well. People want it to end but they do not know how to go about it. We're afraid, we feel helpless, etc. I think the best thing any country can do is to unite as a people regardless of race, religion etc, and put an end to governmental corruption. I really do believe in what Gandhi taught, along with various Yogis and spiritual Avatars. It's a difficult road to follow but it's the best one I've come across so far. Namaste-Anora

To unite people is the greatest challenge. If not impossible it is too difficult a task that is a vast country like India. Yeas if Gandhi philosophy is spread and mass awareness is created things could turn into a good shape nut I am not optimistic.

Let's just face the facts that Politics is Dirty and no matter what these elected people will do, they will never improve our Government nor our Country at all. There is no other solution to this spreading hunger for power, corruption and violence. The only thing we can do is to pray to God. If God will change your heart for the better, it will start to reflect on us first, then on our family, then on our love ones. I may be concerned more on Spiritual things than to focus on worldly matters because it is like a bridge over troubled water. And i guess, no matter how many Rulers, Presidents will come and rule the country, it will just stay the same or else worse. Keep your focus on God more.

Hi! I respect your point but I can not agree for God wont help us as we ourselves too are to blame for this plight. We need a civil war or the entire set up has to be changed.
