I painted my son's room black!

Last Christmas, I surprised my then 13 year old son with a gallon of flat black paint. Sound strange?...... Well, he knew that I wanted to repaint his room and he had been begging me to get black paint! I just could not imagine it! I said "it will look like a dungeon!! He really persisted. Then..... I saw a photo in a magazine where a wall had been painted black but the trim was a stark white. I loved it!! I ended up painting two opposite walls black and the other two a stark white with white trim throughout the room. We have decorated now in a movie theme (movie posters, film reels, etc.) It looks great! Have you ever done something that you initially thought would be horrible, only to find that you loved it when it was done?

Something about teens and the color black. I wouldn't want a black room, but kids love it. I'm a pastel type person.

I think black must seem like a rebellious color to them. Good point!:)

That sounds like a very interesting combination and I am sure that it balances out perfectly, right? Well I've never had my room painted, but have had other family member's had their room painted. Lol, I've helped paint a room I think, but don't remember. When and if we get our own place, I think we'll most likely paint our room blue like it is now, My fiance likes the color. Now other parts of the house will be varying shades of brown, or maybe red.

Black? It sounds quite absurd to have a room painted black. That is one dark and sad color that I really don't prefer. I love bright and happy colors always. However, it seems you have been creative enough to bring in the best trimmings and combination so it will look great. It must not be as dark as I was imagining.

hello rocketj my eight year old son wants his room re-painted as well, and he wants his room to be painted black as well. i think that he said something about his trim being red. whatever. it sounds like that the room that you-all painted like that for your son turned out really well. i guess that when i get around to Spring Cleaning each room of the house, i will have to get some black paint and have at it. his bedroom is going to be easy to re-paint, just three walls to paint in there and also just around the window on the other wall. the window is set in the middle of the wall, and on each side of it, is a built in closet and book shelves above that on each side. so i have to think about what color that i would paint them when i go to re-paint his bedroom. i have already painted the ceiling white with one layer of paint. i will probably re-do that again as well. thanks so much for sharing the news about the black paint on the bedroom walls like that and it looking nice. take care and have a beautiful evening.

It is nice to be able to see the finished product before you do something like that. I certainly would look through magazines and the internet to see if I liked it. If it looks good, go for it. I bet your son is pleased too.

Hi rocketj1! I am sure it looks amazing! My husband's cousin is onto black and white theme for his condo unit and it really looks great. He has his living room walls painted in black and have those special kind of lights that added drama to his home. His sofa is a mixture of pure white and black and white prints and all his throw pillows are all in black. His kitchen and dining room is painted in white and all his plates and kitchen stuffs are all in black. very elegant! Just amazing! Take care and blessings to you! lovelots..faith

Yes, but then I am hoping you are not renting, repainting that room white will be a pain no one should have to deal with

To rocketj1 I bet it was hard work, I just hope he never changes his mind about having a black room, then I advice he invites all his buddies for a weekend of paint and pizza :) AliceWebland I actually do not mind making repairs on the place where i live, I rent too, but sometimes the landlords do not like it when people paint the appartments or houses, it is just for arguements, as it is they try to keep the deposit anyways.lol

No, we own. Thank goodness. But... the trim in his room was originally burgandy (you can see why we needed to paint!). That took four coats of white paint to cover all the way! Whew!! That was hard work! Thanks:)

I haven't seeing my daughter is only 7 weeks old. But my friends mom let them paint thier rooms the way they want. So one of them painted their room orange and has a permenant marker, and lets people sign her walls. Their mom believes that they should be able to express themselves in their own way.

We once painted our room in two colors of orange and blue. I thought it would have looked terrible, but once it was done, it didn't look too bad at all. That was way back in the 70s when colorful rooms were the in-thing.. But now, all our rooms are various shades of white. Black? I can imagine that done in the right way, it would look quite cool - Derek

It's so nice that you did that; you're a very cool mum! I think that it's nice for a child (or anyone) to be able to express themselves through the design in their bedroom. Expressing yourself is good and healthy. And I love the idea of the black walls. It sounds really unusual and arty. I can't think of anything I've done that I originally thought wouldn't work like that, but I'm sure that I must have done over my lifetime.. I can think of things that went the other way though; like haircuts I thought would look good, recipes I thought would work well, etc. etc.. lol! Lots of things which seemed like a good idea at the time..
