Recession should not be reason enough to postpone or abort any plans for a family vacation. I think we should even take this opportunity to unwind and take off those negative thoughts that's more of a burden than a motivation. But considering the tight budget that we all have at this time where do you think is the best, most affordable, and convenient place to spend it?

You really can find vacation packages at decent prices if you search for them. I agree that a great vacation is one where your family is together and it can be just hitting the beaches near your home.
Vacations are very important to me and my family. Even though we are also going threw hard times, we have planned 2 vacations this year. Our first on we rented a condo on the beach in Ocean City, Maryland. After this was already booked, I found a great deal in Daytona Beach right on the ocean in a condo. They only wanted $685 for the week ~ and it is Easter week. We couldn't pass that one up!
So our family is actually takeing extra vacations this year.

I'm happy to hear that you're family can have an extra vacation this year. I guess it's just fair to reward ourselves sometimes of the hard work that we do every day. I'm not sure if we can go a vacation for this year but if that won't materialize we can think of a good dinner or time in the pool where the kids can enjoy.

My kids love having a picnic dinner right outside by the pool. Then we take a dip, play games and just enjoy family time.

State parks can be great vacation spots. Long ago when my kids were young and we didn't have much money, my husband and I used to take them to one of the state parks in Maryland where we would either camp in our tent or rent a cabin. We also went to Pa. and Virginia a couple of times. The one in Virginia had a pool along with paddle boats for rent to take out on the lake.

I think that buying a family sized tent would be a great idea. It is possible to travel by train, bus or car to a campsite. I like to go camping by the sea or in the countryside. It would be possible to get emails from a budget airline then to go for one of their special offers on flights like London to Trieste and then bus down to Slovenia. They have some lovely campsites. Traveling on a plane like Ryan Air with hand luggage only would be one way to keep the cost low.
