Would You Like To Help Donate Kibble For Cats and Dogs In Shelters For Free?

I heard this story on the World News Now the other night and think it's wonderful. A young girl, aged 12, named Mimi Ausland from Oregon has a great love and compassion for pets all her life and as early as age 9 wanted to work in her local shelter. But, due to her age couldn't, she could only volunteer there. Many of the dogs at this shelter were "foreclosure" dogs...that is dogs that were abandoned by people when their homes went into foreclosure and they left the pet behind. She couldn't help notice that as with all shelters nationwide, keeping shelter pets well fed was something of a task, as most shelters are non-profit and rely on donations. She wanted to help, and out of her own allowance would buy a gigantic bag of kibble dry dog food, usually once a week, but she wanted to do even more. Having been aware of the website where one clicks answers to questions and donates free rice to the world's hungry, Mimi then got the brilliant idea of setting up something similar but for pet food and created a website where by participating in "Bow-Wow" or "Meow" trivia, one is presented the question of the day, and one has to answer it. The good news though one doesn't even have to answer the question right, but with each click on the trivia donates 10 pieces of kibble each for dogs and cats. That may not sound like a lot, but according to the statistics a total of 89,435,590 pieces of kibble has been donated so far since April 1, 2008. At first this donation process only helped her local shelter but has expanded to shelters from Oregon to Florida. You can see a video of this story here: http://www.freekibble.com/press-nightly-news.asp One can sign up for daily reminders to click everyday at http://www.freekibble.com/ {Warning: These are NOT referrals links but links to the FreeKibble Website and story about it} Way to go Mimi...and who says kids can't make a difference or come up with brilliant ideas?

Great idea. Such a good heart. I already play today. You know that I am all about pets and I will play on her site everyday. I will also send this link to many people. Thanks.

I was on that rice site late last night...I never realized they had a bunch of categories not just the one, so I switched to the French language one--I studied some French in college, so testing myself in French was good exercise for the old brain..I actually did better in the French and remembered a lot ...LOL

I thinks that that girl is an inspiration to all animal lovers. At such a young age she could come up with that idea. That is wonderful :). Anyway, I did take the trivia for both the cat and dog links. Glad I could contribute in some way to helping these animals :).

It makes you wonder though why the major animal organizations, like the ASPCA don't set up something like this on their websites, doesn't it?

With all the doom and gloom most of us hear on the news, it was great to hear something positive like what this girl started with her kibble site

wow thats amazing, there was a girl in my 4th grade class that took a donation from people and seriously used the money to buy bulletproof vests for the police dogs in my city, I thought it was cool because the police dogs didnt have them yet, also if anyone is interested in helping out any charity without actually spending money theres a site i've been using called www.goodsearch.com (I think thats what it is) but you can pick any charity almost (I usually pick the aspca since I'm an animal lover) and for each search you do they donate one cent to your selected charity.

I thought you posted about this before (I thought you were the one who had told me). Maybe I'm just confused. It wouldn't the first time! I've seen the little girl in People even, spotlighted for her work helping animals. I think it is really cool. Ever since I heard about it, when I log on, the first thing I do is go to that site. It's really cool what we can do to help that is absolutely free!

That's totally awesome! Good for her and the dogs, too. The foreclosure situation has affected everyone. I'm happy that kids are getting involved in civics. Makes me want to do more to help my local community.

Hi pye, Oh how lovely to hear such good news for a change and what a lovely little angel to do thar the animals, now that is a very idea to start one here in the UK or buy some pet food and take round to the nearest shelter. I myself donate money everymonth to the shelter and the money goes direct from my account to the shelter and I get monthley news of all about the shelter. I have been doing that for a long time now. Bless her. Bright Blessings. Tamara xxxx
