We all have heard of this sayimg, when my child says something bad or they did not do what they were told to do, then the parent will wash their mouth out with soap. Has this ever happened to you as a child? Or have you ever done this to your child? This applies to anyone else that washed someones mouth out with soap. I want to know if this is just a saying or an deliberate act. Many parents have said that they have done this to their child. And I want to know if they are just saying this or has it actually happened. What do you think about this?

It has never happened to me but I have a sister who has had the experiance. She was young and would not stop saying a word that I cannot type here. She was warned several times and then it happened. She was a bear to deal with but my other mom (that is what I call my step mom) got it in her mouth and made her chew then spit it out and rinse.
I was to scared to laugh but it was very funny. (my other mom was a very kind and gentle woman but she had been pushed to far) Needless to say my sister still does not say that word, and we did not push our luck any more, we know that she meant busniess.

She is actually one of the best people I have ever met. She tried everything else she could think of first and this was all that worked. My sister laughs about it now.

I hope nobody has ever had to experience this before. I thought the saying only existed because it referred to someones mouth being cleaned out so to speak becuase the words they were saying were dirty. If anyone did do this I am sure it would be considered as a form of abuse.

I have a Chinese-American girl friend who do this to his boyfriend.
His boyfriend is a bad boy type and always swear... so she lose her patience and pulled her bf's hair going to the women's toilet and she soaped his mouth there while other girls were watching and cheering up for her

Hello cream. I have never washed anyone's mouth out with soap. We don't have such a saying in our country, but we usually say in our local place, like "You stop it and you'd better go and wash your mouth", which means that he or she shuts the mouth from saying something that is not supposed to. lol. Thank you for your discussion, friend. Good day to you.

Never heard of this before. I have never had my mouth washed by my mom or dad when I said something bad. I think it must be in a culture of your country or society or family because the only thing I remember is that my mom putting my finger in chilli powder so that I would not suck my finger all the time! LOL

hahahahahaahahahahaha...nope and I hope I don't have to. I don't have any kids yet, so I don't have to threaten anyone about that. But I dunno, it's kinda strange to do that. hahaha.

Nope, but I do remember having it done when I was a kid. Actually I don't remember who did it but I do remember it...it must have been when I was really young...5-7 age. I don't think it's a good thing to do and I think there are alot better ways to handle bad language with kids then that way.

I can recall my brother gettting the bar of soap put in his mouth and he took a huge bite out of it... he was such a snarky kid!
I don't think the soap we have today is the same as what was used back then - there are so many additives and detergents - I would not think it would be a safe lesson.
That being said - my neighbor once had her child who was ignoring her washout her ears with soap for something like 5 minutes - stating since it is obvious that you can not hear me...

Hi cream dear! I have heard about that saying before and until now. But have to yet meet someone who truly have done that. I have heard some parents warned their children to behave or else their mouths will be washed with soap and I do wonder just like you, if they really did this to their children.
Take care and blessings to you!

Hello cream97! I have heard a lot about it many times. I think if ever it's true, it's not right to do. It's very cruel to wash the children's mouth with soap. Isn't it poisonous?hehehe..I am glad my parents aren't like that because I was once a bad child and I would never ever would do that to my children to be.

I've never had it done to me, but I have gotten soap in my mouth accidentally and I see why it works. I have done it though, to my niece, I used Dove soap, and though I had to wrestle her to the ground she never took my threats as empty after that. She stopped swearing (around me anyway) so I say it worked.

I had a deal with my ex girlfriend that if I kept cursing at her she would wash my mouth out with soap. Well, I called her the worst thing you can call a girl. When we got to her house. She ductaped my arms behind my back and dropped a bar of safeguard in hot water then pushed it in my mouth. I had my mouth washed out for half an hr. She twisted it in and out and had it stuck inbetween all my teeth and made me suck on it as she kept dipping it in the water. It was horrible. I didn't curse for a while after that even though it was done a 2nd time. I think lynn chan needs to wash my mouth out for the way I've been talking.

It was done to me and my brothers when we were kids and it did teach us a huge lesson that what our parents say is what the mean. We weren't to swallow the soap but to basically taste the soap in our mouths so to teach us to listen to our parents. It is nasty tasting and very bitter but it taught us a lesson, that's for sure!

Hi cream97,
As I have no childre and my mother has never done it to me so I just think it is a saying, but saying that once when my friend's son swore at her I did put some washing up liquid in his mouth and since then he has never swore at his mum or me and has grown up to me a very polite gentleman. I must have washed it out of his mout when I done. Lo1. Hugs.

After threatening many times to do this to my daughter, I did finally have to break down and give her mouth the old soap treatment. I remember this working for my mother on me when I was a child, and it worked on my daughter once she finally got it.
And by the way it tastes really bad! :~}
