What do you think about a teacher dating his/ her student? We hear about a lot of relationships that forge in the classroom. How would you feel about dating your teacher or your student?

Hi nikky,
Your question is an ethical question and it is hard to judge whether it is okay for a teacher dating his/her student. It really depends on the culture, etc. In Indonesia, it depends on the level of education. If it is a primary to high school education, then it will be not alright for teacher-student relationship. But things will be different for university. I frequently see lecturer - student relationship, even until they are married.

In the US it is considered unethical no matter the age of the student.

Hello,Nikky! In India we consider teacher-student relationship a sin.So we never allow such relationship to materialise.According to Hindu philosophy the teacher is considered as the father of the student. So question of dating with a student does not arise.thanx.

It's complicated as it seems because there are lots of factors why this kind of relationship is not favorable. I think it shouldn't be allowed in high school. In college, maybe it's ok. The only problem is, it may be unfair for other students as the teacher may manipulate the grades of his girlfriend. It would also be not a good sight for the public.

In order to answer your question, I must assume that you are referring to situations where a teacher, who is in their 20s or 30s, dates an underage student. If this is the case, then I think it is absolutely disgusting and wrong on every level. When we date someone, we are making an attempt to get to know them better because we sense a connection with them. There is no way in this world that a 30 something and a teenager can have that kind of connection. If they do, then there is something seriously wrong. The teacher is probably very immature with very little or no life experiences (if this is so, then it's a mystery how they succeded becoming a teacher in the first place). The student, the child, which is what they are, probably, most likely, was never allowed to be a child. Childhood is an essencial process, it's fundamental. Next to parents, teachers are supposed to be the most important person in a child's life. They give us the tools neccessary to at least try to be successful. If a teacher is going to date their student, then, not only are they a pedaphile, but they have terribly failed in their goal to teach.
On the other hand, if the situation is taken to the university level, where both teacher and student are adults, that's a different story. In that case, if they really see their relationship going anywhere, then they should do the right thing, and one of them should transfer to another place of study.

I think in college that would be quite acceptable already but then professionalism should still be observed. Both should behave accordingly within campus grounds.
If ever the student is in the class where the teacher is teaching, I think both of them should seek advice from their superiors if the student be transferred to another class just to make sure there isn't favoritism.

yes.
Well it depends if it just friendly date or educational date. I think it is okay.
But if it is deeper than that, that is another story.

I have seen this case in my classroom. We all were feeling so bad. How a teacher can do like this? Student is Student. But teacher has some guts they should use them.

Not only is it a crime, it is gross. Why a grown man or woman would want to have a relationship with a child is beyond me. And to clarify, I think that a child is anyone who is not of legal age.
I am going to be a teacher and I feel that the people who call them selves teachers and then have a relationship with a student should be tossed in jail with other child preditors.
I am sorry if I have offended anyone but I have very strong feelings about this. It is hard to be considered a profesional when your peers are dating kids.
