Beats or Lyrics?

My fiancee always laughs at me because some of my favorite pop/top 40 songs have awful lyrics! I'm guilty though - I listen to a song mostly for the good beat that it has. Half of the time I don't pay any attention to the lyrics.
So I'm curious, do you judge whether or not you'll listen to a song based on its beat/sound or the lyrics?

i am more of the lyrics and not the beat..i always try to find the meaning of the song and if i like it then for sure i'll always listen to it..admit it or not there are some songs which has a very good melody and rhythm but it's senseless and that's annoying me..

Yeah, sometimes I have found that some songs actually have great lyrics and a great beat, sometimes I have also found that there has been a great beat, perhaps with not so great lyrics. Some songs I have noticed have a very simmerler beat and lyrics to other song. Sometimes I may of found I liked the beat but wasn't clear on what the actual lyrics were, I guss that where looking up the lyrics can be handy on the internet ect!

I listen to songs based on both of the two.Beats are very important coz it influence your feeling to this song. But good lyrics can improve the level of a song..

Most of the time the beat is what get's my attention, but when I listen to the lyrics and like them as well that is when I find a song that I really like. There are still a lot of songs that I like but don't really know all the words to. I think all of us do that at some time or another (like a song without really knowing the words) especially songs we hear only on the radio.

On my personal experiences, I am basically attracted to music with great beats. That is what you hear first before you came to internalize any meaning of the song. So that would probably attract you most than meaningful lyrics do. Of course, there are artists who could came up with songs with attractive beats and meaningful lyrics which really make them great artists.
I also think that when somebody prefers a genre that also somehow influences his/her inclination as to what type of music he/she listens. I would not expect somebody who hates rock music to try to dig in to the very meaning of the song and would actually consider liking the song even with heart-pounding guitar riffs on the tracks.

I am 95% beats, 5% lyrics. I listen music which has only beats mostly and i am happy with it. Lyrics are like bonus option for me in case they fit with the beat, if they don't it will be better not to have them. Most of the top listened pop songs have their power because of the music beat.

I like beats and lyrics but if I have to choose one it would probably be beats. It is hard not to like a song with a good beat. I think that is the most important thing to me and something that I like to be able to have in my life. love that rock.

Okay, I hate to show how old I am but here goes. When I was a kid my older cousins would come over and watch us and they would watch a show called "American Bandstand." Every week the show had teens rate songs and vote for what they thought was the best song for the week. I think they had three ways to measure a song. They would usually rate a song high if it had good words, a good beat, and they thought it was easy to dance to. Hey it was cool back then.
My personal preference is the lyrics. I like to sing with songs (in private, like the car with windows rolled up). I do not want to sing songs that degrade women, etc. I like any kind of music especially if the lyrics lift me up, are soulful, make me laugh, etc.

Actually, beat usually comes first for me. Of course, when it is a new song, we would know that through listening, except when you're the type of person takes time to look first for songbook and start reading all the song's lyrics. Because, for me when I heard the beat, and it sounds good or strucked my emotion c",)that's the time I will search of its lyrics. If I found its lyrics good as well as its beat, that's when I could say I love that song.
