Do your children spend the weekends doing homework?

We had to cancel some weekend plans because my daughter's got plenty of homework last weekend. It's not the usual homework which involves just answering some exercises...she had to make three research papers. It will be her school break in ten days time and she also has to study for their final exams. I just feel that the school is putting too much pressure on the students on the last remaining days. Weekends are supposed to be family time, time for the kids to relax and recharge. Is this the case in your child's school? Are they even allowed to give homework during weekends? I was told that in some countries, there shouldn't be any homework during weekends. Thank you in advance for your posts.

A plenty of times we also had to do so , sometimes teachers just give too much work and I have noticed things like excersise books thery make the kids complete towards the year end in the homework. Its like they put their responsibility on the shoulders of the parents. I also feel very annoyed at it, they never plan things out and then kid is supposed to just slog through the weekend. He returns more tired to the school after a weekend. Most I hate is the project work they hand out and then parents have to do that as its oftne beyond the capability of the kid. I read on net how its done in other countries, kids do it at schools in groups with guidence of the teachers. I feel a tremendous change is required and it will come but will come over the years and very slowly here too.

im in cali, US. i literally study 24/7, there really isnt any breaks from school, then again im ranked 4 in my school so im kinda one of those over achievers but my homeowrk depends on the class. my english class overloads me with hw every night. i can have nearly 3 projects overlapping at one time. in my other classes i usually just have one assignment a night. i really dont have that much spare time to spend with my friends outside of school, but i still spend time with my family going out and such

It is rare for my youger kids to have homework on the weekends, they are only in 1st and 2nd grade though. Now, my oldest, who is in 6th grade often has weekend homework. Sometimes it is because he has put off an assignment and sometimes it is because the teachers assigned it for the weekend. I never have liked the idea of weekend homework. I think that if it is a project or research paper, that is one thing, they probably had a lot more time to work on it, just chose not to. I know my son is known for putting things off as long as possible. Rgular homework though, I feel should be reserved for Monday thru Friday. Not only do I feel that the weekends should be family time, but also time for the kids to unwind a little and enjoy life.

Hi lynnemg. I usually don't mind having homework on a weekend for as long as it's just the regular exercise type. But what ticked me off is that they made the students make three research papers and they were all given on a Friday to be submitted on Monday. It really ate up the entire weekend. You are so right, kids should get to enjoy weekends. Thanks. Have a great day!

MAybe 10 years ago in my country, it is the same situation with yours. But now it has been changed with the policy of reducing the school burden. Now the children has the less homework and exercise books. It is much better now.

Well the school my son goes to, thinks different and there are pros and cons to it, I must admit. There’s practically no written work during the week and that’s a great relief coz I sit with him after my office and the reading and practicing part we can do as per our priorities, but if there would have been written work, it would have been difficult for me. But for weekends, they do give some written work….not much though, some pages of handwriting, some questions to be tried at home, some arithmetic. But its just before the exams that I push on the accelerator and there’s little respite both for him and for me…we just have to study during the weekend.

Even if my kids have homework on the weekends, they wait until Sunday night to do it. Last night at 8pm my son was working on a project that is due on Tuesday. I was actually surprised that he didn't wait until Monday to get it done~ my kids are very last minute. My daughter has to read for 30 minutes every night for the next month. I don't like this because the parent has to listen to her reading. She reads by herself all the time and when we have together time we like to play games. She did read to me on Saturday morning and then asked if she could stop so we could get going to sign her up for soccer.

Hi elmolovesu! My nieces and nephews have load of homeworks to do every weekend and also some projects or research paper to finish at the same time. They are now having their finals this week. I really sometimes feel that there is too much work being given to students nowadays and hopefully the school will minimize this so as to give the kids some break during weekends. Take care and blessings to you! lovelots...faith

My girls are only young eldest is in school but only just and homework isnt sent home yet but you know if she was bringing home so much we had to cancel plans or she had no free time to relax I would be speaking with her teacher to find out why so much was being sent home with her. WHile i understand and agree that homework is important i also think some free relaxtion time is VERY important to any age child as well as family time school shouldnt encroach on that too much.

My youngest one is a senior this year and he doesn't usually have homework on the weekends. He had to prepare to give a speech at a senior seminar last week and he did use the wekend to prepare for that but as a rule he doesn't have too much. It has been that way since hhas been in school. Here they kind of frown on weekend homework and it doesn't happen very often unless it is something special or something like that. Also I think another reason they don' give a lot on the weekends is because they hav ballgames and a lot of acivities on the weekends too.

My oldest is in 4th grade and only has math to do on the weekend, and it is like pulling teeth to get him to do it. They do sometimes have special projects, but we have about 2 weeks to do them. Math will only take him 5-10 minutes to do it. My 2nd grader never has any work on the weekends.

It is all right, I rather my kids spend more time in their homework, and study; better than their playstation games and PSP. They love to play too much, and television I forgot to mention. They might need some discipline time on the weekend to finish their assignment.

Wow!~ No homework for weekends?! Which country is that? I wished I had studied there!~ Haha!~We haven't got any kids yet but I was from a Chinese school so that meant tons of homework for us during the weekends!~ I remembered I had to wake up like around 5am on a particular Sunday where I had to finish my homework because we were going for a hotel stay!~ That was when I was 12 I think!~ So many years already but I could still remember it so vividly!~ Chinese Schools always had so much homework compared to the English & Malay schools!~ And it's especially true if one is in the 1st class + also reputable schools
