Wikipedia reliable or not ?

Hi all
I recently heard at school that Wikipedia isn't reliable as a source. Simply because all the information is supplied by its users. So you have no proof that it is true, it could be true, but at my school it needs to come from an authority.. And since the users, or most of them, aren't that, it isn't reliable.
Do you agree to this ? Or do you think Wikipedia is reliable as a source ?
Thx.

It is as reliable as any other source of information, especially where opinions vary and there may well be two sides to an historic event for instance.
One man's freedom fighter is another man's terrorist. Who is to say which is correct?
If you read a school modern history book in different countries you will be surprised at the variations possible.
But I see that as a healthy thing. I see that as an education in its own right. Students must be made aware that it is important to read different views on the same subject and then to formulate an opinion rather than follow blinkered statements.

Hi NrgDfenZ!
Wiki is very informative and should only be used as a secondary source because some of its content is opinion based. If you want cold hard facts, go to a library and pick up some books on whatever subject and get different viewpoints.

Wikipedia is a good source of information although it may not be 100% accurate because as you say it is edited by its users. So if the users have not checked their facts the info could be incorrect. I would use it as a starting point but it is always best to verify the facts with another source just in case.

You are correct exactly as we can add the content as we like after creating an account in wikipedia. All the internet users are not serious and many are having the habit of playing with such important things. You just keep this as reference and don't try to submit it as a proof anywhere. We can search more and more with the keywords we got in Wikipedia, in some other search engines to get the exact idea.

Well Wikipedia is informative but not 100% reliable. Its a general user contributed info you find on Wiki. I find it mostly helpful and very rarely incorrect.

I think it is reliable at a point as if the user does not refresh the topic with latest changes then it would result in incomplete information. Everyone that surfs that site and finds that the information is wrong or incomplete should correct it.

I learned in my college that it is not reliable because anyone can add or change information it it. You ar not allowed to use it as a source becuse of this in my college. I still find the information there interesting but not completely reliable.
