Sychronize files between PC and external HD

Okay, I've got an external hard drive that I want to use to backup a lot of files and folders from my PC onto. Copying them isn't a problem, but what I'd like is some software that, when I run it, will check the backed up files and folders against the originals, and update the backup with any changes. Can anyone recommend anything please?
