well, what i do before is listening attentively in the classroom. and when a professor explains something that's not in the book, i write it as fast as i could. i don't write everything that he says, i make it more short, i summarize what he says in a way that i can understand quickly what is it he was discussing. you just really have to be attentive and alert =)

effective note taking is very essential when u r in college...it's a skill...most of the ppl find deficient while writing notes...u need immediate feedback once the words get spoken...it requires ur full attention...ur sitting location can adversely affect ur note taking...so here r some tips u need while note taking:
[b]
1)tune urself with the lecture...try to focus more on words rather seeing outside...
2)always use ur abbreviations while taking notes like-eg. for example, diff. for different, tech. for technology...it will fasten ur speed of writing...but always remember what ur written abb. means...[;)]
3)write down only main points...
4)don't vibrate or make noise...
5)if anything get left, leave that space blank & confirm it after the lecture is over from rest of the class...
