Also posted at http://morethanamolehill.wordpress.com/2009/03/16/the-secret-of-secret-shoppingthe-secret-of-secret-shopping/ As more and more people lose their jobs, many will turn to the Internet for ways to make some extra money. Unfortunately Many scammers will do the same. I heard about a thing called "Secret Shopping" when I worked as a Optician, making and selling eyeglasses. My boss told me that his wife did it, And how to spot someone who was a Shopper. If you don't know what I am talking about, I'll give a brief description. There are companies that Contract with service and retail Companies to send people into their stores and evaluate the service of it's employees. As a shopper you are given specific instructions of what to buy, or Sometimes Buy and Return. Then You fill out a questionnaire and if you have followed the instructions to a T they will refund your money but you get to keep the product. Sometimes you receive a small stipend in addition to the item. There are a lot of companies out there that will hire Secret Shoppers over the internet, But there are a lot of companies that will rip you off too. If they ask for money up front, They are probably not legit. Even if they are, many companies don't, so try them first. I always check www.ripoffreport.com before I deal with anyone over the web. It has user generated content and companies have a chance to respond, so you get both sides of the story. You can check the forums to find out who pays and who makes excuses. But the title of this article has the word "Secret" in it, So you are probably looking for a secret aren't you? Well The Secret is...You don't have to go through a Secret Shopping company to get paid. It's called Customer service. Many companies will pay you for your feedback if you do it right. I once calledGorton's Fish company to comment on their boxes. Big Box Little Tiny fish sticks. They sent me a coupon for any Gortons product free. I recently called CS for a bottle of wine to comment on how much I didn't like their rubber corks. They sent me a check for the amount I paid for two bottles of wine. I called Taco Bell a while back and told them that their food did not look like their Menu Boards. Not only did they send me a coupon for a free meal, The next time I went in, there were two people interviewing Customers about the food. I don't know if it was purely because of me, I doubt it, But the bottom line is Companies WANT to hear from customers. Good or bad. Especially when the economy is stale, they want to find ways of improving their service. Sometimes that is better than lowering prices. So Just make a phone call, Be polite, Being angry will get you nowhere. But let let companies know how you feel about their service. Name Names if necessary. Who knows you may just get paid for your opinion. And leave a comment here if you do.

Nice tips. There are legitimate companies that pay people to do secret shopping, but the only ones I've tried where temp agencies that I used back when a college student...and they never ask you to pay for the things you are trying with your own money. The most fun assignment I had doing secret shopping was when I was hired to pretend to buy Volkswagen cars.

ripoffreport doesn't offer service in the USA. i wish it did. I work for a company out of Canada and do secret shopping for them. The pay is not very good, but it's something. PM me if you want more info.

Hi morethanmolehill! That is very good information. I am sure this will help a lot of people to be aware on scam sites and at the same time that going directly to customer service is almost the same as being hired as a secret shopper. Thanks for sharing this valuable information. Take care and blessings to you! lovelots...faith

Unfortunately, your discussion on time with myLot new "tasks" feature has been activated a while ago. So, many members will focus on this new feature as it also looks like a "The Secret of Secret Shopping". Anyway, thanks for providing good option with good opportunity. But, with myLot offer, nobody doubt about payment.

If you can figure out how to accept a task, let me know. I agree with you, though. No one ever has to doubt that Mylot pays.

I haven't been as active as I used to with my compliments and complaints but I used to get a LOT of free stuff by giving companies my feedback. And you're right about the scams. There's a secret shopper scam going around now that sends you a big check that you deposit and send them back everything but a couple of hundred. Guess what? Yep, it bounces a few weeks later! They have a couple thousand of your money and you have a lot of NSF fees and you're out every cent you sent them! Clark Howard dot com is a great place to check for financial scams. Thanks for bringing this up!

I heard about that scam on the news. That is partly why I wanted to do this article.

I have worked for mystery/secret shopping companies... that are not frauds. There is a website that you can use to find the legitimate businesses I think it was called MSPA. I also am a fan of writing or calling a company if you are not satisfied with their product. My mother raised me to do this. I think you owe it to the company and your fellow consumers to inform the company of defects. Companies do tend to give you coupons and free products to make up for their errors.

What a great discussion. Thanks for posting this informative discussion. I know someone who is a secret shopper and she is paid well. Has been with the company for something like 25 years. I wouldn't have any interest in shopping to make a living but our kids would love to do it in their spare time. You mention calling the different companies. Have you ever tried to email them and if so, did you get the same offers for free food or replacement food and drinks?

I have received merchandise for giving my opinion of something, and I have received coupons for just asking about something. I have also Mystery shopped, and it is legitimate. I have also been scammed before I found the real sites. I do less and less of it, because I am so busy, but I usually get food, for instance and a payment for filling out the survey. It just depends on whether you enjoy doing this kind of thing as to whether or not you choose to pursue it.

I have a friend who does it regularly but now I am disabled and couldn't do it even if I wanted to. It takes someone that has a lot of time, is quick to grab the job off the net before someone else does, and is able to move around a lot.

Mystery shoppers, I think they are called. I would not mind being one except that I do not enjoy shopping. More often, it is the shopkeepers who should be more aware of such shoppers. They are spies engaged by their bosses. lol.

You've been reading my mind, sweetie! I've been looking for a legitimage secret shoppers site for a very long time. The link you left comes up empty for me. Could you please! please! please! post a message for me in my profile leaving a few legitimate links? Pretty please? Thanks, ronaldinu! I know what you mean about going straight to the company itself. That's how I got 4 free meals from Denny's! Being on Disability I can always use a free meal and/or free merchandise.......
