In paying using credit card, would you prefer on installment or not?

I had my first credit card last year 2006. At first, I have no intention of using it for I prefer to pay cash. But someone told me that I should activate it for I might need to buy something on emergency basis. She was right and I enjoyed using my card as long as I can pay the amount before the due date and there will be no problem.
I bought my laptop using my card on installment basis. If I am going to buy an item that would cost more than five thousand pesos. I would prefer on installment basis.

If paying on installments dont you have to pay interest on every payment or on the grand total.
