I'm putting this out here cause I really don't have a clue about it. I don't know who sang it or what it's called, but it played on a station today.
It was sung with an Irish accent, and it's about Noah's ark. Noah was told to take the animals in 2 by 2, but don't forget the lovely unicorns!
"green alligators, long necked geese cats and rats and ... and don't forget me lovely unicorns"
I wrote in the words i can remember, not that they're much. It went on to say that it started raining, and the unicorns were being silly and playing in the water, they wouldn't come on the ark because of that. And that's why you'll see "green alligators, long necked geese ........................ but you'll never see a unicorn"
It's not much to go on, I know. I was a long way from pen and paper when it was on the radio, and a long time from home, so my memory isn't the best. But it was a pretty sounding song and I'd like to find it. If I could figure out who sang it, and what it was called!
Thanks.

(A Poem by Shel Silverstein -- recorded by the Irish Rovers)
The Unicorn
A long time ago, when the Earth was green
There was more kinds of animals than you've ever seen
They'd run around free while the Earth was being born
And the loveliest of all was the unicorn.
There was . . .
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
The loveliest of all was the unicorn.
The Lord seen some sinning and it gave Him pain
And He says, "Stand back, I'm going to make it rain"
He says, "Hey Noah, I'll tell you what to do
Build me a floating zoo, and take some of those . . .
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
Don't you forget My unicorns."
Old Noah was there to answer the call
He finished up making the ark just as the rain started to fall
He marched the animals two by two
And he called out as they came through
"Hey Lord,
I've got green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but Lord, I'm so forlorn
I just can't find no unicorns."
And Noah looked out through the driving rain
Them unicorns were hiding, playing silly games
Kicking and splashing while the rain was falling
Oh, them silly unicorns!
There was . . .
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Noah cried, "Close the door because the rain is falling
And we just can't wait for no unicorns."
The ark started moving, it drifted with the tide
The unicorns looked up from the rocks and they cried
And the waters came down and sort of floated them away
That's why you never see unicorns to this very day.
You'll see . . .
Green alligators and long-necked geese
Some humpty backed camels and some chimpanzees
Some cats and rats and elephants, but sure as you're born
You're never gonna see no unicorn!

Thanks!! I can't believe I'd never heard it before. My hubs couldn't believe it either. It's been around forever, but this is really the first time I'd ever heard it. I fell in love as soon as I'd heard it. Aren't they just the prettiest lyrics? Darn it, there I go again, singing it over and over in my head. Sigh.

I remember seeing the Irish Rovers perform this in a pub once. They had the whole place up on their feet clapping and singing along. What a great song to get the feet a tapping and the hands a clapping! Such memories. Thanks snowcat and a Happy St. Paddy's day to you!

I think I'm gonna have to go looking for an Irish Rovers cd. If I liked this song so much, I'd probably like more of theirs. They had such lovely crooning sort of voices. I wish I'd seen them in person. I'm so envious!
