Both b and g use 2.4 GHz and thats why they say don't use 2.4Ghz cordless phones if you have a wireless network at home. Many things from a cordless phone to a RC airplanes are at 2.4GHz. So for a consistent network you might want to use 802.11a, cos thats at 5Ghz and bypasses all the other frequencies.
All said the popular standards are now getting replaced by 802.11n, which is really fast and can give you a bigger range. No worry about interference.
