I am contemplating going back to school. I graduated high school in '93, and I never went any further than that. Right now, I am a stay at home mom, but, with the way the economy is, I don't know how much longer my husband's income can sustain everything. Besides, for my own sanity, I need to find work. I know I need more than just a high school diploma if I am going to land a job that is actually worth the effort. What I am wondering is what would be the best way? Regular 4-year college? 2-year? Business school? In your experience, if you were like me and had to go back to school, did the knowledge you gained actually help you in and pertain to the workforce you ventured into?

I think 2 yr course will do as if you'll get 4 yr course you might be overage for other positions if you're be looking job just after graduation. Much better if shorter term of education for special courses needed where you will be employed. For a four year course, however example education, there's no age limit required in practicing. Good Luck.

I am doing the same thing. I'm just now starting my college years. I started a family right out of highschool and chose to take care of them while they were little until both kids were in school. My youngest started Kindergarten this year, so now I can do it. I tried campus, had a parttime job, and I still had all the duties of a SAHM. Unfortunately, even super moms can't do it all. lol
I don't know the best thing for you, because I don't know what kind of career you're wanting. Or maybe you're just wanting some quick training to get a better paying job. There's dental assistant training that can be done in a small amount of time(i want to say 3 months, but don't quote me). There's tech colleges that are quick. I don't know how old your kids are, but if you think you're able to, you can get some quick training and do a 4 year at the same time. That way you have good job now, and when you graduate you'll get a better one later. Just try to figure out how much you think you can handle because you're still going to want family time, 'me' time, and alot of your SAHM duties will still stick with you. Another thing to keep in mind when choosing your work, try to figure out which would be worth the time. The economy is looking bad and there's alot of cutbacks. I know I mentioned dental assistant only because of the quick training, but your area might be cutting back on assistants. I know some medical offices in my town are cutting hours and getting rid of certain positions. Look in your classifieds and see what is always hiring. In my area, they always need nurses. The more knowledge you gain the better your chances are for getting the job and getting better pay. oh, here's a tip: some jobs will say no experience necessary, but what they don't say is "but if you do have experience, you'll get paid more". That's a company's way of not having to pay more for their employees. but, the more experience the more qualified you are.
I hope this has helped you. Good luck with your decision.

Maybe going back to school is a great idea under such global economic crisis which made lots of laid off people. During such period thousands of people competed for one low-paid career.Obviously, nearly every corporation increase requirements in each career, so rising one's ablility is deemed significant.Furthermore,I am self studying for improving my English now. Age is not a key if you want to study.

I think its a great idea to go back to school. I think you need to try and figure out what type of job you would most be interested in working and then find out what college degree you would need for it and then you could figure out what type of college you could go to. I myself have been thinking of going back to school. I graduated high school in 94. I unfortanately dont have the time or money with 2 small sons. Good Luck to you!

In my opinion, the knowledge I gained from school really helped alot. Though I haven't graduated college yet coz I stopped (can't balance work and school), I still managed to get a job because of my secondary education. I feel that the young generations should value education so they could at least cope in the real world.

I think it is a good idea to go to school to upgrade your skills. It would be great if you could manage to do some work as well while you study. I know it is difficult to manage having kids and all. I don't know what you are interested in and where your strengths lie, so I can't comment much on that. I have a 4 year degree in software engineering and I am planning to do a 2 year MBA soon. I am opting for an MBA because I am passionate about starting a business and be an entrepreneur. It is tough but I love it. I think it would give me knowledge and exposure that I need.

I went back to school for medical transcription in the 90's. I worked in the field for approximately three years. My sister has done medical transcription for 15 years for a major hospital. The medical field is going more and more to the doctors dictating the work into a computer and the medical transcriptionists are being phased out to save money.
My other sister just finished her two-year degree that she worked on while her children were growing up. If you have a local community college, they usually offer free testing to see what careers you would be suited for according to your interests, etc. Once you have this test taken, you can do research on the different career options and narrow down the field of what might work for you.
I wish you well in this venture.

i was learnt English in the college, but,i have worked in the saled-filed for tow years, and the envronment of my working place is far from English,so i almost forget my specialty, forget how to speak English.the most important thing is the ability is whitch i use English to conmiunication with foreigner so poor,so if i want find a job near to the English field ,i have to go back the university for continuing education. But,you know, its so difficult to find a now job under
the economic-stability,i have no choice ,so what i can do it ?
But,no matter how difficult it is ,i would go back school in the near future.
