How to have a hot shower without turning up the heat!

I recently discovered how to make my shower nice and hot without turning up the heat level. I have it at about 120 degrees so it won't scald but it's nice and hot. However, it was never very hot, just warm, and I love a hot shower in the winter. I was washing dishes last week (I have no dishwasher) and about 30 minutes later went upstairs to take a shower. Wow, the water was HOT! I loved it! By trial and error, I figured out that if I use hot water like doing dishes and waiting half an hour, the water heater has been forced to bring the water temp up again and I get the water at it's hottest. I might even be able to turn down the heat and save more money! So now, I always do my dishes 30 minutes before showering to get a nice, hot shower!

That sounds like a great idea dragon! I don't think I ever thought of it that way. I am definitely looking to save some electric and some money. If I can try something like doing dishes thirty minutes before a shower I will. Basically it kind of makes a lot of sense anyway. You figure that after waiting that would create the water heater to pump out more hot water later if that is the basis of what you are saying. Turning down the heat and saving more money over all is just what my family needs. The power is through the roof! It is just getting harder in these times of a harsh economy. Any kind of help and advice in how to save is so welcome. Thank you for your words of advice friend. Take care.

I'm glad I could help! I'm always looking for ways to save money. I'm saving about $25 a month now that I switched to a smaller garbage can--after all, it's just me and I rarely fill up even 2 bags a week. I wish there was a way to put the water heater on a timer. I only use hot water in the evenings. If I could use it only an hour a day that would save a lot!

Hi dragon. You have given me some ideas and I do appreciate it. I like the posts that you put up here. Some of them are quite helpful to me. I can definitely see how you are saving money being that it is just you where you are at. As for the water heater idea I think that maybe you could turn it off for a while and save money. A friend of mine told me something like that to save on electricity. I am not for sure how that would work but it was just a suggestion. Anyway I am always looking for more ideas on how to save extra money. Cutting corners has been a normal way of life for me for some time. We are in growing economic strife at the time and we could all use a little help. I don't know if there are any signs of things getting better but we all have to hang in there for now.

That sounds like a good idea. I love hot showers also. I also really like hot baths. Either of them are pretty nice as far as I am concerned. I like to have hot water and not run out. Sometimes I run out of hot water when I am taking my bath and I dont really like that very much.

When I had a bathtub, I'd fill it with hot water, not much cold, just to the point where it was almost too hot. I'd settle back with my book and in about ten minutes I'd run more hot water because by then the heater would have kicked in and heated some up. During the hour or so I'd languish in the tub, I'd let some water out and add more hot as it heated up. I miss my bathtub!

It is a very good idea. I don't use water heater. I am already paying a huge amount for electricity and I don't want to increase the electricity bill. I love taking bath in the hot waters. What I do is, I have a tank and during afternoon and evening the water will be heat due to sun on the pipes and tank and I take bath during that time. I am planning to save some money so that I can buy solar water heater and can take bath in the hot water.

That is a very good idea! It wouldn't work where I live, at least not most of the year. I love your avatar. My grandfather gave me a picture of that angel when I was young. He made the frame himself and it still hangs on my bedroom wall half a century later.

This does not make any sense. It can only means that something is wrong with the thermostat on your hot water system. Logically it should be 120 degres all the time... unless you have used some hot water and it needs to warm up again. It seem to me that the system has lost some of its sensitivity... and only light up when there is an extreme change of temperature.

I had assumed that by using some water it would make it fire up and heat more intensely, thus making the water hotter. But you do make sense. When I have my a/c unit checked I'll see if they can check the water heater, too. I'm sure they'd be glad to in anticipation of trying to sell me a new unit! I'm glad you chimed in, because if there's something wrong with the thermostat it probably means I'm wasted some energy and money. Thanks!

That is a great plan. Like restarting the system. I wish I could buy one of those heaters that just heats when you need it. They use less gaas but cost more to buy. I have what I have in my house but in my next house we might think about it a little more. Thank you for the tip. I will have to try it out.

I would love to have one of those, too. I hate running the water for so long till it gets hot, it's like throwing money down the drain. But I surely can afford those new devices!

That sounds strange but I'm happy it works for you! My husband does something similar but completely different. I take baths. He always waits until I've turned off the water in the bathtub to take a shower because, he says, the water in the pipes is already hot from me filling the bathtub. I'm not entirely sure how that helps him to have a hot shower, though. It helps him to have instant hot water, but not hotter water. We have a tankless water heater. We get our hot water from the water going through a series of pipes before coming out the tap. The pipes are heated inside a rather small box filled with pipes in the basement on an as-needed basis; there's never water just sitting there, getting heated up and using extra energy to stay hot until we need it. I love it. It saves a LOT of money. There's only one problem that could happen and that's that we might run out of propane. Everything in our house is run on electricity except the tankless water heater. My husband and son installed that themselves and my husband bought two propane tanks about as large as an average water heater... I think they hold about 125 gallons of propane each. We have to check the one that's connected often as it starts to run low so we won't run out. I wanted him to put in a much larger propane tank so we could have a propane company come out and fill it as needed, but he thought it was better to get two smaller tanks. (I still think it's a stupid idea.) HE has to disconnect the empty tank and put it in his truck, then connect the other, full tank. Then, he has to take the empty tank to the gas station and get that filled up, bring it back home and take it off his truck and roll it around to the back of the house (on a dolly, of course) for when it's needed. To me, that seems like way too much work, especially since he has confirmed bulging discs in his lower back. Stupid, right? I'm waiting for the day when those discs snap and he's paralyzed because he never listens to me. Of course, THEN, I'll be able to hire someone to install a HUGE propane tank and have things done the way I wanted to in the first place so we'll never run out of propane OR hot water!

LOL! Men are so stubborn, aren't they? I think they feel we have power over them if they admit we are right. Seems like a LOT of trouble to go to, not to mention the damage to his back. Aussie mentioned I may have trouble with my thermostat so I'm going to have that checked when I get my a/c serviced soon.

Sounds good too bad with my plumbing situation I would have to wait atleast an hour between any significant water usage.

Is that a gas heater? Mine does that too but I was going to call the repairman. I never know if it is going to be lukewarm or hot. It always seemed to me that after the dishwasher ran, the hot water would be hot.

Yes, it's a gas heater. And I'll have to have it checked, because one person said it might have trouble with the thermostat. Good thing I started this or I never would have known!
